Oil Pressure/ Temp Senders

   My air-cooled van seemed very lacking in driver info, so this being my first VW - let alone first air-cooled - I've picked up a couple of VDO gauges to keep an eye on what's going on.
I know I can probably fit a twin pole pressure sensor (like in my Saab) and there seem to be sump plug sensors for oil temp or maybe dipstick, but are these the best positions to fit the sensors? What about those spin on adapters that fit with the oil filter?

Like I say, I'm totally new to these engines so any advice would be very welcome.
