Good to hear you are getting closer to fixing it.
If the big relay you mention is the terminal 30 relay AKA J317 which is often marked '109' I agree with your garage guy, it's cheap and good to eliminate. It was a common failure on older VW's. Theoretically it should stop a whole load of things working if it simply doesn't supply 12v to the things it should. But on mine it malfunctioned in some other way causing a 'terminal 30 implausible signal' code recently which caused caused no problems but a load of spurious other engine codes which I cleared and never came back. Mind you, this could all be part of my van's recent mid-life crisis which includes a faulty ABS sensor, a failing door lock sudden weird codes plus sudden mood changes. So, 8 or nine weeks in now. Talk about totally demoralised, I normally leave work for that feeling
So all the tests went full circle back to the instrument cluster so I made the decision to have them rebuilt and ECU testing assured me they'd come back like a new set and should resolve any intermittent faults. I also swapped out the convenience power supply board...wasn't that. They were delivered... put them in and exactly the same faults came up all over again! VCDS codes were a plenty this time. My guy is still convinced it's the clocks and he reckons they've committed to a repair they can't really do... The can network/Power Train Data bus. I'm going to send them back for a third time but more than likely ask for a refund and go with trading them in for another set via TPS, I'm out of money and options. It's a shame its such a lovely van, never carried a load, well serviced and looked after but I've had it! When this fix is done she's going! Those codes seem to be all about communication. The individual controllers can cause communication problems but so can the wiring between them.
You need someone with full access to wiring diagrams and the knowledge to know how to measure what voltage or signal every wire should have at each end and how to test them. The dealers have this and so do good independent specialists. But it will cost. I'd rather have my eyes removed with a cocktail stick and pickled before I'd actually let anyone else work on my van. But there does come a point where you need a specialist. |

Wow TDI you must be clairvoyant! That's next on my garages hitlist! He is going to buzz each one out! As you can tell I'm right fucked off been without it since Aug 20th!! If this next phase fails it's main dealer time I guess. I'll keep it all posted.

So buzzed out the loom, all good, when all connected back up all the lights barring the airbag went off, communications back up and running. Road test brought ABS/Traction back on. Advised it can now only be ABS ECU. Sent that back for a repair under warranty... no faults found or stored. I'm about done in by it all
I'm going to get it all back together and take it to a main dealer now. I can't do without it anymore, I'll have to bite the bullet as they say...unless someone want's it as a project! I'll keep you posted. Don't know what's left to test.

Could be a faulty ABS pump ? IIRC These often have an electrical fault with a sensor (and not just in T5s). I think there are some people who can rebuild them now (much cheaper than buying a complete new pump from VW).

I think it is the ECU part of the pump that he sent off for testing Greg. I'm not sure their testing is 100% reliable. It does look like it really is the ABS ECU that's faulty. Another few hundred quid.

Back on the road
So, the ABS ECU went off...came back, no faults working perfectly. The last straw attempt was the main ECU. Sent this off....NO FAULTS. Talk about wanting to fucking kill someone So I said, lets get it all back together and I'm going to go to a main stealer. Put it all back and hey presto, no faults...working perfectly. Lots of shoulder shrugging and mentions of fuck knows. Lots of it could've beens. The road tests and long run I did today have not seen the gremlins return. Lessons have been learnt though. This still cost me £600 and nothing was actually fixed! I'll count my blessings. Anyway...van could be for sale shortly now its all resolved. Thanks for the input guys, as ever, your contributions are always welcomed.
