hi vw t3 folks
I have resently converted to tdi with 68 pin ecu, but need to know how to check if my ecu have a problem or if the pump is bad, how to check?. It will not start/ I think the pressure is too low. I have been running with a mechanical pump until last week and that started with no problems. Cheers Soren |

First of all...do you have communication via the k line with a diag tool?...these engines need very little run in fact but power to the ecu is one of the things it will require..does the pump "buzz" when ignition is turned on?.
Minimum requirements are a crank signal, a power to ecu at correct pins..earth..and wiring to pump intact...will run without glow plug, air mass, pedal sender, pressure sensors, turbo..all of it! just uses fixed replace pent values for most things...I seem to recall 4 wires make it run...the rest make it work.. |

Thank so much for replying. it seems when taking the pump cover off, the lever for fuel is completly shut, fully retardet! I have checked the power at the pump plug that seems ok. A little correction, when I turn the ign. on. the lever under the fuelpump cover moves about 5-6 mm then return to "0" after about 3-4 sec. Cheers Soren

Have you cracked open the fuel lines to remove air while cranking the engine over. No diesel with VE pump will start with air in lines as the injectors won't pass the air.
Does the engine fire at all? or just cranking over? |

you must get a hand held diagnostic tool.

I agree, I need a diagnostic tool, but where to connect it? I understand that there is only one wire for diagnostic, via the imobilizer unit and when checking the obd on google, there is a lot of wires for the diagnostic. I have to get a plug ! does it matter which one ? obd2 or what.
Latest news I tied the fuel lever partly open and i started but ran very rough. Soren

You need the 16 pin plug from a VW 1996 on.
You will need to attach 3 wires, a battery live an earth and the diagnostic wire to immo or ECU. Each pin has a number but I don't have the detail on which numbers are for the wires.

Got the engine started, after bleeding and some pump ajustment, plus 2 wires at the e-trottle extention, still got to get the dianostic as it seems to run in some limp mode with very retarted injection( lots of diesel smoke)

got hold of obd tools (china cable) but canĀ“t get connection to ecu. then I read somewhere that some have used pin 15 on obd plug??
my ecu have nr: 028 906 021 af. I also have some issues with the wire diagram as the one for Jetta 97 says clutch and brake goes to signal earth and the other mayby (russian)says these should have 12V. the pin nr: 17 and 20

Hi chap, on the 'early' TDI's such as yours, F36 (clutch) and F47 (CCS brake) inputs switch to earth.

Thank you
I understand then that no dammage is done if I connect pin 17 and 20 to pin 33. Soren |

No damage, but the ECU MUST see F47 switch at the same time as your F brake lamp input or else a fault is logged and it may drop to limp mode (not certain about that). F is normally earthed, then goes to 12v when the brakes come on, F47 is normally open circuit, then goes to earth when braking. I use a 5-pin relay to produce the F47 signal. F36 clutch switch is used to blip fuelling during gear changes to help smoothness.

Hi again
I cannot get any connection to ecu via obd. I have tryed 3 differend vag-com cables and one wireless dongle (elm327)no connetion it only says, check if ignition is on! I have 12v on pin 7, 12v on pin 16, ground on 4 and 5. I tryed to add K line to pin 15 but no change. Any ideas anyone?? Soren Edited by soerencarlsen - 21 Jul 15 at 19:02 |

I got a new ecu (028906021AB)as I failed to get any obd connection from the old one.
Now how do I detect if I have a early or late ecu with regards to earth or +12V at brake pedal switch. (Terminal 30 - Signal ground (early TDI) or switched 12v (late TDI)) Any info is welcome Soren |
