I was very tempted by a Gipsy on German Ebay this weekend - it sold of the equivalent of £4.3k with a spare 5 speed box, 2 cab doors, TUV for a year, recent head, cam belt etc.

Anyway I chickened out - questions is how bad can there get when the wood rot? I like the idea of a coach built but not if I have to rebuild it totally. Any thoughts?

They rot like buggery.
Bank on a reframe in the near future of any unrestored one.
I'd go buy a later t4 gypsy or cheetah
They are grp bodies

I chickened out again - it was subsequently re-listed twice selling both times for around £4k. Having seen some of the rebuilds on Karmann Coachbuilts I reckon that was a sensible decision!

They can be an expensive repair, reframed ones go for lots more money.
Go look for a grp t4 cheetah or gypsy.
They don't rot
