I just bought my first LT40 4x4 out of Austria. I don't have it yet, shipping. Looking at the pictures on the stick shift it's a five speed but the owner said its a four. Which one is better? Should I try and get a five speed for it before it get on the boat to the states?
Thanks

numbers to the left of the bold are the year ranges. number to the right of the bold are the gear ratios. the bold letters are the trans codes.

Don't know much about gear ration in comparison to driving the vehicle. But I quess to play it safe I need to start looking for a five speed. Any suggestions?

Does that mean that technically the four speed and five speed at the last gear and have the engine running the same rpm will get the same speed? Both being 1.00.

I thought I had put an explaination in there, so thanks Chris.

It is really only more recent car gearboxes which have a gear less than 1:1, unless an overdrive was fitted, whether internal or seperate external.

As for driving a four-speed, you will be revving a little more, so you do not drop out of the 'power band' but I have only used 1st about five times, so in reality, I am using a four-speed gearbox. There was mention of a 5.91 and 6:17 1st gear, in that table, but still 1:1 top.

Quaife sequential gearbox has these ratios 2.400 1.694 1.333 1.150 1.000 0.889. Good for 375BHP and only five thousand and eighteen pounds.Wacko

Ok I feel better now. I think I'll just stick with the four and change out the shifter knob! Thanks

Regardless of the gearing, there is no overdrive on that beast and top speed is a whopping 5 mph (ohhh, did I miss a "0", maybe notWink). Chris will be more up to date on that.

Yep!

The only advantage that a 5 speed has over a 4 speed is a little more flexibility as you work through the gears.

Back in the slow lane, yeah!
