RESOUNDING YES,
Must be done every 4 years !!! Always checked mine after replacement and they are already quite cracked, so not worth risking !!! |

You don't need to bother if you have a spare engine kicking around, plenty of cash and fancy ripping out your engine and throwing it away and all the aggg the recovery costs sure don't bother.
Any sane person would change it! In case you missed the point there was a wee bit of sarcasm in this post. Change it! |

on this subject, is the general consensus that mileage or time is the bigger enemy to the cambelt? Or is it a combination of mileage and how it was achieved(stop start vs long distance) Or maybe local conditions. I just changed the belt on our 7 year old Suzuki SX4 diesel. Only done 28k and never had a belt. It looked okay but the 7 years was scaring me!

Personally Timmy I have seen others learn very hard lesson about timing belts and chains. Usually there pride and joy is off to the scrap yard.
A combination of the stress of starting, driving, chemical breakdown, weight of right foot. Only once ever did I know a belt break and not screw an engine and it was my best mate in an 90 escort, sitting at the lights touched the throttle to move and the car stalled. The mechanic couldn't believe it wasn't game over. But if he fell in shit he always smells of roses. I would describe not changing belts as crossing the M25 with a blindfold on at rush hour. I have taken some off look fine but when off and flexed backwards coming apart. My Dad had the belt done early on his pasco and it had began to fray losing about 4mm from one edge. They are a pain that's why I liked the 5 pots and gear drive. In the vans I think VW say 70000 or 4 years but I do 60000 or four years others here have pushed towards 70000 and learnt the hard way. On the T5.1 the cam belt is not enclosed or protected from all the crap thrown up from the road, no casing or under shielding. VW cutting cost to maximise profit. I love the news describing VW as a reliable brand, obvious they don't own one! |
