?Is it flickering at all, or is there no movement?
Flickering would indicate a snapped, or at least badly frayed, inner. No movement, snapped inner, no drive from the gearbox or broken speedo.

If you need to, put the van in 5th, jack up the rear wheels, onto axle stands, and disconnect the speedo drive from the gearbox. By turning the wheels, you should see the speedo drive operating, or at least someone or a video camera should see. If you are alone, you could wrap a rope or load strap around the tyre, anti-clockwise, and then pull.

Plenty speedo repair companies around, though I have never needed one, if it does come to that.

Pretty sure it is done from the outside, but you may be able to see if it is damaged.

Hiya, check the plastic drive pinion that goes into the gearbox - this is done by simply unscrewing small plate where the cable ends and enters the box.
Fistly check the pinion is there!! If its damaged it could be a sign that the drive within the box is damaged , or as i had in my previous van, missing!
You can feel inside the box by sticking your finger through the hole to check.
In my case it was a case of taking the back end of the box off to replace the drive inside which a local gearbox specialist did for me, with the drive provided by Aiden Talbot, another forum member who specialises in gear stuff..

Certainly not what i would call a cheap fix!

The blue plastic pinion is driven by the bit you should be able to feel inside the box...

Good luck!

If the part is available from VW in Germany, Brickwerks can get it.
