No expansion tank?

   Ok after having the red light flashing in the dash for some years I read this thread (1986 1.6td) . So I have been topping up a tank in the engine bay, oval plastic container behind the battery with blue cap and a hose coming of it. I do not have a "top up/expansion tank" behind the flap. For all that the engine has never overheated, fan has kicked in very rarely and when it did it was in heavy traffic on a hot day.
So my questions............

What is the risk of no expansion tank?
I must have had low or no antifreeze for some time, I read this may be bad for head bolts?

The engine was converted from a golf to my T3 if that makes any difference.
