Hey all,
I'm helping a mate of mine out with a 1Z conversion similar to my own (from a '97 toledo incidentally)
He's fabricated different engine mounts and all that jazz that is somehow strangely different on the audi 1Z's. bonus being an early one is lack of immob Big smile

It's now got down to the wiring stage, and only just discovered that the ecu connector is only 55pins long Shocked (mine is 68pin) 90% of what's there is traceable to a sender/unit be it MAF/Fuel pump/temp sensor etc. by careful labelling when removing from the donor, however there are a few wires that are just cut Cry

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for one of these at all?
any help appreciated,
Regards
Brent

More time spent under it than in it....

slightly off topic, did you have any problems with the seat ecu? did the donor have climate control?

I did my conversion with a 95/96 toledo and had big problems with the ecu not liking the cut down wiring, it seems the seat ecu looks for the climate control first and if its not there it assume major fault with engine and goes into limp mode.

Spent 4 months sorting mine, including getting other seat ecu/key/imm but didnt get a result until I went to a golf ecu/key/imm, mate even tried the seat stuff in his golf and it worked fine, tried all the seat stuff in other T3 conversions and instant limp mode every time.

ah, yes I remember the joys of reading 'dont use a seat toledo as a donor' on some forum post halfway through my project! haha
As yet I'm not fully up and running with that, was getting there but then a panel van came along with an AAP box thrown in that I couldn't refuse, so I got an AAZ engine for the panel and am doing the interior up, full RnR ready for camping at a few shows this year.

The TDi has taken a bit of a back shelf but hopefully come easter I'll get down & dirty with it again. It did have air con yes Unhappy
I have taken the loom right down to the bare minimum, using a 96-97 jetta wiring diagram, 95% of wire colours lined up and have a couple of the relays sorted as I remember. I am searching through the mass of 'excess, not required' wires to get a couple of the OBD plugs that I think I snipped off, without these I think any kind of diagnostics is impossible and it will run crap (if at all)

I did a cambelt change one time without plugging into a laptop on one of my other toledo tdi's (engine still in the car) and above 8 5 the turbo went into limp mode which quickly reset by turning the key off and on again. Pain in the arse tho.

Good to know though about the ecu issue, thanks. I hopefully will wire it all up ok and get the diagnostics working (have to get a USB thing somewhere, and 'VAG-COM'?) and go from there, I do have a VW ecu/key/immo to try also. I think someone mentioned somewhere on TDI-Conversions (Yahoo group, mostly americans) that the ECU can be reprogrammed to avoid the air con error, and in all likelihood the immob - though I want to keep mine, better for insurance. Who does this in this country is unknown to me right now.

Best regards,
Brent

still hunting a 55pin diagram btw...
Thanks to those who have PM'd me some info & names of potential information hoarders LOL

Hi there, this is a link to the t4 forum tdi conversion 'database' http://www.vwt4forum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=78009 there are some good wiring pages in there but golf based, my swap was out of a passat and was completely different! If you get stuck it may be worth a pm to Penbryn on there as he is VERY knowledgeable and helpful i may add too!
Good luck with it, my 1z is great fun to drive (in a t4 i may add) and was well worth the work.

That would be legendary Matt
Indeed it does have two 2-pin plugs for the diagnostics. Come to think of it, so did mine (before being snipped) wonder if I can wire in a later diagnostics plug at all. seems only 1 of the wires goes to the ECU
So much reading to be done! I should download all this stuff to a kindle for bedtime reading GeekLOL
Thanks!

A legendary Norwegian fella from VWAF (VW AUDI Forum) has come up with the goods here, so chuffed. Here's the scans straight from the post - has been kind enough to also offer some translation, good thing is that VW code things so is easy enough to decipher if you have an english diagram from same era. e.g. N18 = EGR

Proof is in the pudding as they say - smoke outta the tailpipe YEY SmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmile
http://youtu.be/9_xYR97Gl7o

Quite chuffed = understatement

In terms of the setup so far (full ECU control):
JX air filter in O/S/R section behind light cluster, MAF on outlet & piped across the rear crossmember to the turbo inlet. Intercooler located down by the lower N/S/R panel under arch. Wires routed to front for potentiometer, switches: brake & clutch, Glow/diagnostic light - not yet mounted for the first run-up

It appears that sometimes it's not combusting all the diesel and some white smoke is seen, hopefully this is a lazy No3 injector needle lift sender as engine had been stored in the wild for 3 years. wire tidying to follow but least we know it works Big smileBig smileBig smileBig smileBig smile

Good stuff Andy, glad I could help. Let me know how much more poke it puts out compared to the mech pump you were running as a stop gap, my mates van is undergoing suspension work now so no runs down the road yet
I'll get round to translating the rest of the wiring diagram sometime hopefully.
Happy motoring!
Best regards, Brent

Can the 55pin ECU have a cruise control or not?

I didn't know that my car do not have a proper wiring. I found out when I bought the cruise control for my car and my brother's car.

Then I found out that I have a 55 pin ECU and he is having a 66ECU.

I am not sure, there appear to be a lot of 'blank' pins on the 55-pin ECU connector, depends on the spec of the vehicle I guess. Our donor did not but that's not to say it isn't possible. it was a mission finding this basic wiring diagram just to follow and make it run let alone find a higher spec cruise control version. good luck

Just a heads up , a good source for all wiring diagrams is Autodata.
If you have a running fault you can use measuring value blocks in VAG COM/VCDS to diag which cyl is at fault, your probably better off getting all four injectors reconditioned.
As for the Seat ECUs the reason they flag up the drearded "output stage controller failure" is down to Aircon module being missing from system.

Hi there,

I read your post and the offer of a copy of the audi 80 tdi wiring diagram, mine is the 68 pin ecu by the way. My email is alderwood10@yahoo.co.uk, thanks again, Arthur

Hi, I'm sorry for dragging this thread back up but it is the only reference I can find for the ECU that is fitted into my Audi 80 TDI 1z powered VW t4.

My problem is I don't have a L & K line plug to connect to a legacy cabled Vag-Com. I'm pretty sure my 1z is over fueling but - from what I've read - you cannot adjust the pump timing without connecting it to a diagnostic box.

I've followed the translated pin outs above but both pin 27 (white/red) and pin 42 (green/red) terminate in small ring connectors that are both 12v live? Are they supposed to be 12v live? and if so why would they have ring connectors that look like ground points?

Anyway I hope someone has an idea as I'm running out of ideas Thumbs Up
