I am half way through changing my head gasket and Turbo plus 101 20 year old bodges. Even with using the Bentley manual and the Pocket mechanic book its been hard to work out how to do things but the post above has cleared up a few questions I had.

As i have had to remove the cam to skim the head i will need to adjust the tappets when it goes back together.  I am still a little confused over thisConfused  Does anyone know what tool and where I can buy it from? Plus if I need shims where do i get those from? The Bentley says I need tools US4476 and 2078?  Mean anything to anyone?

Again thanks for the helpful post.

try vw for the tools, most likely still available, and a set of feeler gauges

Now that I've source all the parts and tools I'm going to have a go and set up my motor.
A couple of questions though:
Is it better to remove the injectors so that the motor can be turned over easier?
What's the best way of turning the motor over?  I know the easiest is by the nut on the end of the cam but that might not be the best/safest way.
Bollocks to it all!!

No, don't remove the injectors.

I usually turn from diesel pump pulley cos it's easy and convenient! This might be naughty though!

Make sure you use the the nut on the end of the crank to turn it over, sometimes you can wiggle a socket and ratchet in between the pulley and the silencer!! If not drop the silencer off, the cam and pump won't be correctly lined up if you don't as the belt tensions incorrectly.
Good luck!

I had a feeling that this was the best way, thanks for confirming it.
