I've just brought a D24t -non intercooled engine from a J reg volvo 940 as they share the same engine. Has anyone else fitted a vovlo D24t into there LT? I'm assuming its a straight forward swap over? I currently have a D24 engine fitted but as the pump seals have gone i fancied a bit more power so decided to go buy a turbo engine.
Also the Volvo forums are claiming the engine in the volvo produced 109bhp where as on here the lt version only produced 92 or 95 bhp. Why is there a difference in power if there the same engine??

Thanks,
Craig.

The lt engine has reduced bhp because it was designed to have greater torque

So what did they do then to increase bhp in the volvo version? I'm sure they run the same boost pressure.

When i install the engine a shall be fitting an Intercooler to reduce those intake temps along with a full belt change and service.

When removing the engine is it better to take it out the top or romove the front axle and take it off that way??

Hi, It sits in a hole in the centre of the flywheel, (or in the end of the crankshft in the case of the LT). The gearbox mainshft passes through the clutch and the end of the mainshaft locates in the bearing. When the vehicle is in neutral, or when the clutch is depressed, the engine is turning but the mainshaft may be stationary or moving at a different speed. The spigot bearing allows this movement without undue wear on the flywheel or shaft. It also acts as a locator to centralise/support the mainshft - a badly worn spigot bearing can cause clutch vibration/judder. In some cases also known as a spigot bush - in which case rather than a proper bearing its just a cup made of softer material - usually made of brass or similar alloy.

Hope this helps.

Peter.

Thanks for the explanation. I understand what you mean now. I've been to get the engine today. Looks very clean and has done approx 160k but does have full service history so hopefully should be quite good.
When i change over the clutch do i use a turbo or non turbo LT clutch? Are the clutch's different on the turbo LT's as there are 2 different ones listed on eurocar parts.

Hi Craig, that I'm not sure about - but my guess is that if there are two types, the turbo clutch would be stronger, perhaps stiffer springs, but I've copied the following from GSF website. From the way they list them, the D and TD clutches are the same - only the petrol has a different part no:

R-623036000 CLUTCH KIT-228mm LT 6 Cyl Petrol 1/87 >12/95 93.00 Add

R-624218700 CLUTCH KIT-240mm LT 2.3 4 Cyl Petrol AGL Eng. 5/96 > 145.40 Add

R-623013116 CLUTCH KIT-228mm LT 6 Cyl D / TD 8/85> 12/95 (Eng.DW061588> DV006762>) 88.75 Add

R-623013116 CLUTCH KIT-228mm LT 6 Cyl D / TD 1S/ACL/ACT Engs. 90> 88.75 Add

R-624227700 CLUTCH KIT-240mm LT 2.5 SDI 5/96> Eng.AGX012500 89.65 Add

R-624302500 CLUTCH KIT-240mm LT 2.5 SDI Eng.AGX012501> 92.00 Add

R-624228400 CLUTCH KIT-240mm LT 2.5 TDI AHD Eng. 5/96> Eng.AHD047378 129.60 Add

R-624301100 CLUTCH KIT-240mm LT 2.5 TDi 97>99 (Eng.AHD 047378>) 112.00 Add

R-624302600 CLUTCH KIT-240mm LT 2.5 TDi ANJ Eng. 99> 152.15 Add

R-624311600 CLUTCH KIT-240mm LT 2.5TDi(ANJ)01> *** 114.00 Add

R-500017211 CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING LT All 14.95

Obviously the 240mm ones listed are for the later (sprinter type) vans, but it may be worth giving them a ring - they're all over the country. If you're not in too much of a hurry, you'll probably find one pop up on Ebay for a lot less money - seem to appear quite regularly.

Rgds

Thought I'd update on this. I have finished my Engine install on my LT. Not as easy as I thought. The Bell housing and drivers side mount had to be modified to make it fit along with a hand full of other small things.
Good news is that for anyone out there who has a non turbo diesel I can offer a Fitting service on for the turbo lump. The cost for the labour is £400 plus any parts needed, I.E. filter, belts and clutch ect. Each conversion will take approx a week from start to finish.
PM me for more details.

A few years ago I had one LT 31 with 4 cylinder petrol engine...and I put a Volvo 940 TIC (Turbo diesel intercoler)...but I had to modify a lot to fit the engine I think Its eysier (ehh my spelling) when there is a 6 cylinder engine before....I try to see If I have any picture...But I also put a volvo M46 overdrivegearbox...I dont recomend to do this convert if you have a 4 cylinder petrol engine...so later I fix better driverlicence to drive bigger trucks and bought my LT 45 with 6 cylinder petrol ...but I change and put V70TDI -99 engine...and its fun to drive...Big smile

Mike, When I changed the clutch the Volvo engine all ready had the bearing so i used that one. Also theres no difference in flywheels. Took me a while to figure out the plumbing on the van but finally got it sorted yesterday. Just got to fine tune the pump timing as idle is a little lumpy and smokey and get her painted.
