Hi all,
Here's my dilemma I bought a gearbox from ebay I was told it came from a T3 1.9 petrol but the code was well hidden.
I'm just about to fix it to a 1.6td & I find the code ab, which is from a 1971 air cooled beetle 40 bhp, so what now, the final drive & ratio's are great but will it cope with 70 bhp & pulling a 2ton van.
Nightmare!!
Or is it worth a try, it has definitely been rebuilt at some point. perhaps its ok ,the T3 gearboxes are interchangeable ?!
Oh hell i don't know
Anyone any ideas
please please please.

boo hoo, yes it definitely is AB
But the person who sold it to me swears it was in a 1.9 petrol T3,
it weighs about the same & looks identical???
perhaps I'll have 4 reverse gears & one forward.

Hold on Hold on hold on.............!

Lets do some basic checking

Beetle gear box has:-

gear selector on front of nose cone

T3 has selector arm on side of main box

Now go take a look.....

(Beetle box is tiny compared to T3 box)

GaV

Bigger is not always better!

If it looks identical to a T3 gearbox, well its not a beetle box.
You'd have to do all sorts of mods just to mount it in the vehicle and connect the selector.

Hi ,
apologies just found a better photo, of the original AB beetle box & I see
what you mean by the gear change. This means its got a beetle code
which is very clear but is not a beetle box. I think this is a relief , as it fits
perfectly .
But what is it, I suppose I'll find out when I try to move it.
Many thanks to all who contribute, I have felt every emotion possible on
this conversion from despair to fear to relief, & all thanks to you guys.
