Have you compared the ratios in the gearbox info section?
I get a funny feeling it could be a good move esp. top end wise, but I don't know too much about the JX engines favoured rev range.

Absolutely no problem. My van came equipped with a AAP 5 speed and a shagged french filth TD. Was on the hunt for a AAZ and thought I'd got one.
Turned out to be a CY, which is to all intents and purposes a JX from a passat. But at £20 had to give it a go!

First gear is still too low for every day driving and will generally move off in second  on  flattish  road.  You do need  1st  for  hill starts,  but its a quick snatch to 2nd as soon as your moving.
I do find myself dropping down the gears on long hills,  but will happily  (all be it noisily)  maintain  80mph  in fifth  on the flat.
If anything  It feels generally under geared, but in its unfettled state I doubt it would have the necessary torque for anything higher.

JX is a good little engine and will do everything it needs to. But in my experience, in an untuned state at least (as mine is) feels like your working it a little hard.
