Hi there, i am looing to buy a westy soon and was wondering if anyone can help me out regarding what the best engine would be. I am looking at the later T3 2.1 injection or a 1.6TD. Obviously the diesel is going to be more economic etc but ive never driven one although my mate has a 2.1 1990 westy and that is pretty nippy. Can any one help me out please. Thanks

Diesel is less likely to kick you in the head and run off with your wallet. With the CC being smaller, the tax and insurance will be cheaper and if you drive them properly, they can pull really well. 2.1 is just big a thirsty.

Thanks Goblin, Im looking at two at the moment, one is a petrol 2.1 with 75k on the clock the other is 1.6TD with 140k on the clock, i know the diesel is high milage but dont know too much about the reliability issues with this engine and what they are good for before things start going wrong?

Well maintained a 1.6TD can go on forever. if i were you though, I would look at a lower mileage one.

Just out of interest, horlix. looking at your avatar, are you a bassist?

fair enough lol. I play bass but dad's a guitarist. There's too many of them about at the moment lol. You can easily find a guitarist but finding a bassist or drummer is something a bit more tricky with teenage music trends nowadays!

Diesel is the best option all round, i've had vans with over 400,000 on the clock, might drive a bit slower but will give much better mpg and a lot less maintaince in the long run, 140,000 is nothing for a well looked after jx engine.

If any of you lot have heard of Noddy's Puncture who are the worlds best named ELP tribue band, you'll probably recognise the keyboardist

Guitarist is older version of me (John Butterworth) and the bassist (Malcom Journeaux) is the founder.

I'd also like to point out that ALL of the recorded material is done on a zoom mrs 1266 multi-track recorder.

Good and bad for both

Petrol 2.1: smooth, quiet and fairly nifty, can last to high miles if serviced regularly. Can be prone to coolant leaks if owner neglects antifreeze changes/ sufficient coolant (antifreeze acts as a corrosion inhibitor) MPG is the main issue! 25mpg on a run being the norm.

1.6TD: Usual diesel knocks and puff of cold start smoke, performance is ok but as you would expect you need to adopt chill driving mode with these, think well ahead if you intend to overtake on motorways. Engines can have a very long life if regularly serviced but watch for low oil pressure due to oil pressure disappearing from worn journals (oil light flickering on at idle) the big bonus however is the 35mpg average.

In short: Neither is better and it really depends on your priorities, what you want and what you are prepared to put up with.

Just to throw a monkey wrench in, petrol can be converted to gas for about 1000 quid and give cost per mile of around 40mpg....   petrol is about 22mpg and diesel is about 30mpg.   Gas conversion pays for itself in about 8000 miles.   Gasure is the man to have do conversion.

Many owners say 100k on a diesel is average life before replacement, petrol usually go a little longer, but not much.  Diesel is more expensive to replace.

Trannys last 140-180k on average before problems start...

Everyone has their own preference. I don't know what is best.  Engine, tranny, etc can be replaced, body can't.  Make sure it's rust free, preferable with original paint.  New paint often hides a world of sins.

Good Luck,

Thanks for the replies guys, I think there are pro's and cons to both engines from what i can see, all i want is a good tidy van that will get me around and down into europe in the summer, ive been looking all over the place and it seems there are some really dodgy sods out there who would sell you a right pile of rubbish at a good price, however i have found some good dealers down London way and i think you will know who they are who have been really helpful, this makes me think it might be better spending a little extra for a van that a reputable dealer has brought in who knows what is good and provides a small warranty and is prepared to have a decent conversation rather than the usual forecourt rubbish.....

Thanks again as this forum has been a great help......i'm glad someone knows what they're talking about...

Diesels are great. I dont agree on the overtaking on Motorways thing though, my 1.6TD will happily cruise on the legal limit all day, with loads left for overtaking...

not so great up hills, but other than that its fine.

I just averaged 34 MPG on the trip to Stanford Hall and back...

thats 29mpg on the way down... 70mph+ all the way.

and 39mpg on the way back, never going above 60. (tired and not worrying about slowing my mate down who came down with us in his Audi)

I used to get about 22mpg from my 2.1 on Petrol. About 18mpg on gas.

I could never be bothered with taking it steady with the petrol, but I guess you could see mid to high twenties with a light foot

Diesels are great! you won't hear me say otherwise.

I also went to Stanford Hall and I led the way for a change. Mines a 2.1 petrol and the other two in our group drive campers with 1.6TD's, I drove really steady, sticking to under 60mph, both the other drivers complained that they were struggling to keep up when I overtook lorries. I'm only telling you what they said.

Diesels are great! and petrols aren't bad either, of course a Subaru petrol camper would be the ideal lol a realistic 80mph cruising whilst returning a credible 29mpg and do-able for around £2000 so I'm told, one day..............................................
