Hi all
I have been tracing an oil leak which has been coating the back of my van
for some weeks now.I found that oil was coming from the feed pipe to the
turbo which was fixed by a clean and tighten. However on further
inspection there was also a leak from the turbo plastic outlet pipe, on
removal i found this pipe and the interior of the turbo to be caked in thick
sludge.

Is this a sympton of the first problem(oil pressure loss from leaky pipe)
fixed by a good clean and change of oil. Or is my turbo shot aarrggh. If
deceased then will i be able to replace with the turbo from my 1.9td
passat.
Alternatively how much will i be looking at to swap tengines round if i
take the engine out of passat and deliver in me van to you fine people at
brickwerks. Passat engine ran great when car was taken off the road but
has 120k compared to 90k on the 1.6. Would like a bit of extra kick
though.   If the turbo is a big problem then it would be a good excuse to
go for the change.

Advance thanks
ooops, take it to the expert

It could be the turbo getting worn but its more likely to be oil from the engine breather system going through the turbo, this is normal, do not try to clean in the turbo you will upset its balance. If the oil level is too high it will make it much worse.

When i said sludge i mean 3-4 mm all round. i took the pipe off the passat
turbo to compare and found no sludge just a nice clean pipe and turbo.
Maybe it is just down to no oil changes from the previous owner, but would
that cause such a build up of foul black sludge in my turbo. The van
drives ok but dont have a compare so dont know if turbo works correctly or
not , i can still hit 70 but have always had trouble on inclines, stuck back
with the lorries. Big van little engine i always thought.

The passat engine sits at a nice angle, in a t3 the engine angle is just wrong, oil goes places it should not.

The Passat engine is not in the van, its still in the passat.
The t3 has the original 1.6 td engine which has the turbo and pipes coated
in sludge. Just dont know whether to get some oil additive cleaner and then
do an oil change. Or whether my turbo is in trouble and i need to replace it.

If it needs replacing then can i do it with the one from the passat engine
without much trouble. If it is a lot of trouble then i thought it may be worth
going the whole hog and fitting the entire engine out of the passat to get a
bit more kick.

Thats what i was trying to say, they are ok in passats. Yes do an oil change but don't put any additives in, they only create a problem somewhere else.

Yes the passat engine will fit easily.
