We have read a lot of discussions on the right oil to use in a 2.5, 130 bhp T5. Ours was registered Oct 04 and is set to variable servicing.

I have just been to our local VW dealer who tells me the oil that I need is Castrol SLX Longlife 111, SAE 5W30.

My problem is that the bottle doesn't have the magic 506-01 on it which is what the 'Insider' says that we should use.

Help and advice appreciated as I would hate to give my beloved van indigestion !!

Hi,

You are correct, that engine can ONLY USE 50601 SLX 2 !!!  SLX3 does not have the correct additive and before long you would be repalcing the camshaft.... Which Van Centre gave you this advice??

Hi oN tHe InSiDe

Advice given by Crowsons of Spalding - a VW car dealership we have dealt with over many years and I gave them the  reg. no. which they logged onto their computer to get the vehicle info up on screen.

They 'assured' me that SLX 2 has been superceded by SLX 3 and that is the oil we need for our van!!

Where do we go from here - immediate problem is finding a top-up for a long hall to Scotland - long term problem is what did the dealership put in when we had our first service !!!!!!!

Thank you all in anticipation of any feed back.

As if it wasnt complicated enough, Castrol have brought out an oil called Edge 5w- 30 (whoever thought of a shit name like that?) as a replacement for SLX2 but then in the small print it says not suitable for the Touareg and 5 cyl commercials without DPF'S!

Don't believe what Castrol tell you, listen to my mate oN tHe InSiDe.

2.5ltr 5cylinder engines with the engine code AXD & AXE MUST use oil that meets VW506 01 irrespective of service regime.

SLXIII, whilst superseeding SLXII does NOT meet VW506 01 and therefore should not be used in these engines.

UNLESS IT SAYS VW 506 01 ON THE BOTTLE, DON'T USE IT.

Bloody hell, just checked what oil our 2.5tdi 130 uses for top up and it's castrol SLXIII.

Bought our van in February this year and it was 1 year old. It had it's first service at VW.

Only topped the oil up once but I used what was supplied with the van which is this SLXIII.

I am now going to get the correct oil and hopefully everything will be fine. Not noticed any problems with the van but then we only do limited mileage.

I'm glad you brought this up as I would have continued to use the wrong oil.

Horbs

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Horbs,  Just make sure yours is an AXD or AXE.  It could be the later 130 engine, BNZ.  If it is a BNZ 130 (with a DPF) then SLX 3 is correct.
