Topic: 1Y questions Posted: 27 Apr 07 at 11:49 |
Thanks to everyone who has posted q&a's on here it is so helpful.
I was planning on an AAZ to convert my 1.6CS but after much searching
and weighing up of costs and parts needed I am starting to get a bit
doubtful that we can really do it.
I have been offered a 1.9 1Y at a reasonable cost and as far as I can figure
out from reading the previous posts I can swap out all the bits sump etc
etc from my current CS engine needing very little in the way of new bits -
is this right?
The information section though lists the 1Y as needing the ECU - can this
be bypassed???
I know this won't give a massive power boost (compared with AAZ) but it
would be much better than my current 1.6 and cheaper/easier?
Also will my current gearbox be ok with new engine or should I look to
upgrade it - if so what code box should I be looking for?
Many thanks for the help!

1y is the easiest one to do and cheapest because you already have all the bits. It is just a matter of swapping them from one to the other. You will notice a difference and put the right box with it then it should be better on fuel depending on how you drive it.
Gearbox depends on the one you have in 4 or 5 speed as to what code box would be best. What code do you have in now.

Sorry for being thick,
but what does "is 1y 1.9 na" mean - is na something the engine supplier will
understand? Is there a particular year/model golf I need to get it from. I was
figuring if it was 1Y it was fine?
I am guessing na means no ECU system???????

NA is naturally aspirated - ie non turbo. I think most of the non turbo 1.9's
are the 1y - just ask for a 1y and you should be fine!

I have no ECU on my 1Y.
What's the best box to go for then ? I want to stick with a 4 speed if poss. I wouldn't mind trying to sort out a different box for better fuel economy.
Where is the gearbox code situated ? (i.e. whereabouts on the gearbox :))
Thanks
Ringo

But will you with a box with a higher diff?
IY's don't have ECU's as far as I know, maybe some have a few more connections to the pump, bt that's about it I think...

Too true too true....
Not getting the same MPG as the 1.7D which is a shame - but its a lot better to drive.
My 1Y has got a fair few wires (at least 5 of them are disconnected). I have connected the two fuel cut off solenoids and thats about it i think.
Im half tempted to buy a seat ibiza haynes manual to see what those wires are for.....
Anyway, off to Vanwest.....

Looks like you have drawn out the engine bay and were your going to put things, and alter harness to fit the (to scale) drawing.
like it, will do that to mine when it goes into the syncro.
Were are you going to put the ecu.

I've made up a loom board, with nails to act as guides/ends to wrap wires to.(Used to do that for a living years back...yawn.)
Found a sheet of thick mdf at wickes is same size as engine bay, roughly.
Ecu is going under the bed, theres still the grommet and hole there for it.
