Hi all,

My Westy has the normal glazing and I am wondering just how effective the plastic double glazing actually is? I cannot see it making that much of a difference although there must be some otherwise what's the point?

Would it be a good idea to upgrade if a set of windows were available or is it just wasting money?

Richard

Just make yourself some thermal mats for about a tenner...hell of a lot cheaper than double glazing

the double glazing on ours is brilliant but not essential. Thermo mats, curtains, lights and eberspacher and you'll be fine

You mates with double glazing... Do the double glazed windows sweat as much as single glazed ones do?  Even when I use thermo mats I get sweating on my single glazed windows.

Nah they barely ever sweat. You do need to take good care of them though. They don't like road film an UV so at least once a year you will need to polish them with brasso.

Thanks goblin.  I've got double glazed rear side windows to put in and am looking for the others.  Figure anything that will keep moisture from condensing is good.

tell you what though... they dont half cut out the noise.

camping the other day, and i was in the roof, I clambered down to turn the heating on at 1am, and i was shocked by just how quite it was down below.

Upstairs I could hear the waves crashing on the shore... downstairs, nothing.

And I had the thermal matting on the canvas too.

for double glazing

I clean mine with Mer Polish about every couple of months.

Only downside is they make cars passing by look really big as they have a
bubble effect (thats when you briefly look over your shoulder when trying to
change lane in your lefty westy!)

Yeah ours were free aswell but if you ever damage one and need to replace, they a pig to find and can cost a fortune. Maintenance wise I just don't like too much manual labour and i get tired and fed up with the job in hand. No school tomorrow so am going to get asm uch work done on the van as possible.

Just one thought regarding double-glazing:  I lost a window due to a flying roof tile that went through it.  Since I can't find the exact replacement I'm considering glass.  Why?  Condensation has to go somewhere.  If it doesn't condense on the plastic first, the it goes straight into the coldest parts of the bodywork, soaks into the insulation, sits there and rusts your body.  Better to wipe the glass with a chammy leather!.  Am also fed up with the brown tint and the scratches....

If parking van up for a while (why would you!!) put some salt (dishwasher salt cheapest) in a dish on side and floor to absorb moisture,

Brasso is basically a fine abrasive that cuts back the layer of road shit and UV fade and scratches etc... and it pulls most of the scratches so the window is ice and clear again. I Brasso ours about once every 2 months and you do it inside and out. Don't let it set too hard though because it can be a bastard to get off, and also mask the window seals so they don't go white if you go over a bit.
