I’ve looked at Adrian Talbot but his site says he’s not taking bookings at present.
Can anyone recommend anyone else?
Has anyone used TES, CogBox or Bears lately?
Any help would be appreciated.
Or if anyone has a good box for sale, pref 5speed.
Van is 91 caravelle with aaz conversion.

Cheers

CogBox was recommended to me. But I’ve not actually used them.

Where about in the unUnited Kingdom are you located?

As you say you are running an AAZ engine, has this conversion actually been previously fitted and running or is it part of an ongoing conversion?
If you've already got a 5 speeder what's wrong with existing gearbox?

Cheers ob1, will prob give them a shout.

Danstervan- Ha! Based in somerset but expecting to have to ship.

Conversion has been in for nearly 10yrs. Was 1Y engine, AAz went in about 4yrs ago.

It gets jammed in 1st then free’s up randomly, reverse won’t select at all.
Haven’t ruled out the linkage completely but doesn’t seem to want to select if I try manually via selector arm on side of box.
Has been leaking severely last couple years, been used and abused!
Would ideally like rebuild with taller 5th gear etc
Been putting it off for a while, need to do some phoning around and get it sorted.

Hmm, seem to recall that first gear issues are a known fault. Something like the entire mainshaft moves out of position in the box and causes engagement and wear issues.

I broke up a G reg diesel van with 5 speed box A while back. It jumped out of 1st unless you held it in. It drove ok through the rest of the gears and didn't have mountains of metal swarf in it when I opened it up.
Whether that means the parts are still good after a main shaft moving I don't know.
Built plenty VW fwd boxes but never a T3 so really no expert on that subject.
Sold the bellhousing and input shaft but still have the main gearbox part here aswell as 5 speed linkage stuff.
Plus rear wishbones, shafts and wheel bearing housings seeing as I removed them off the van and some twat never came through with the sale...

Yeah, sounds similar, drain plug magnet wasn’t too bad. Seen much worse! Don’t think it’s terminal but summit ain’t right!
It’s gotta come out to do the seals properly and give it a clean up so might as well get it rebuilt at the same time.
Planning on big miles next yr so happy to spend the money to get it sorted.
Cheers for your input bud

Hi, Ive recently recieved my total rebuilt gearbox from Bears which I sent then collected. Nice fella and clean workshop. Paid  £1550.00 and had my mechnic fit it with new clutch and thrust race. That was a few weeks ago and still having problems to get it all set up. I did last year have all the linkage renewed and maybe this is where the problem is, as yhe mech says its the linkage coz Be say if it drives and changes gears its not the gearbox. Im totally at a loss and talking of loses I lost £420 on a second hand gearbox online that never arrived (wished I paid with credit card and not a visa debit) A rotten b******d  who shut his phone down and the account I sent the money to and the bank can do do nothing and it still grinds my inners.Rinners.Regarding your problem with the gears I would check first the linkage before sending gearbox anywhere or better still which I wish I had done and if you can afford it , go to Creative Engineering and have a replacment fittedso you dont pay anything till its correct. Anybody else who may read this and take pity, I would appreciate any address of someone with 2.1 dj 1989 likage knowledge.Wknowledge.Wife keeps telling me to get shot of it but I cant. Ive had it 22 years and love it. Its an American import to Belgium where I used to work so has Air conditioning and two 50 ltr LPG tanks underneath and quite rare inmy opinion. Never seen one before. Iam 70 so soon it will have to go. Old boys with their old toys I suppose.  Just joined so firstmail. Hope I have not bored anyone. Good luck

Bears sound like a good shout, heard good things in the past too.
Sorry to hear about the online box, that’s proper sh!t!
My linkage is all good, I replaced all the bushes etc a few years back, ran and shifted sweet since then up till lately. Brickwerks kit was just the job!
Got the box out last month, it’s got a bloody great hole in the top of the case!!! Retaining spring on top of case must of been moved out of position at some point so it was in contact with case and wore its way through over time! Either way not suitable for recon now.
I’m gonna take a punt on an eBay special I’ve bought. I’ve fitted it and all gears are selecting and pulling so we’ll see what she’s like when van is off the ramps. Gotta finish a couple other jobs first. The box was cheap enough that if it ain’t right then Im happy to send it to bears for recon.

Don’t give up on your van bud, she’s sounds like a beaut!
All the best

Try contacting stretch661 on here- he had his gearbox on his previous joker redone by specialist (not Aiden) and I'm sure he would give you details without opening old wounds!
