Hi,

In my owners manual it mentions very little about the fuses. It tells me what some of the fuses are for (ie the ones that they allow me to change) but i think i've got a problem with a relay too.

Anyone got any information on what all these are for?

Thanks in advance,

Ringo

While yer at it, is there one that will turn the lights on with the ignition? My old T4 did it an I never had to worry about draining the battery.

Hi the full wiring diagrams should be on the manuals link. as for the lights they are supposed to work independently of the ignition so you can put the sidelights on without the ignition key. when your lights are on when you remove your key they should drop to sidelights automatically unless switched off.

Thanks.

The fuse box in the electricals manual is different (it's smaller than mine) which is a shame. I wonder where you can get more upto date info.

Also the flow diagrams are from 1978 - mines a 1994 and I would be interested to know if they changed or not in 16 years. A lot of the manuals had an update around 1985.

Cheers,

Ringo

Hi
If you go to the VAG cat parts list for your year and model,  it shows the relay use and its position on the fuse board dependant on it being petrol or diesel.

I found it best to copy the parts list and print it out in Word and print out the Schematic separately
It makes it easier to read and you have a copy on hand for your manual. It does take a bit of working out but the info is all there.

If you go to the end of the flow diagrams in the tech section mauals it gives flow diagrams for later models.  Mines a 1989 and I found the info I was looking for at the back/end.

The top left relay in your photo looks like the fuel relay.  Mine has five pins, one of which is very small.

Well i just made this for the fuses in excel - i'll get to the relays later but im really struggling with that. If anyone has ideas of any other uses then please let me know. For example, i have no idea which fuse is for the electric windows or the heated mirrors on my 1994 diesel LT31. Also, i have a fuse 5 and 15 but no apparent reasons for them...

Any help appreciated - once this is more complete i'll happily email it to folk...

Ringo

Hi Guys
I have tried to make the part list clearer, I hope it helps.
For fuses not in the main fuse box you will have to check the wiring diagram which will give their location.          This list is for Relays 1994 LT31 diesel and  petrol. Note the description/use of the relay and their positions marked on the diagram  ie  J,K,L,M,N. on main body 1,2,3,4 etc for those above the main fuse board

Happy new Year
I thought you all may also find this usefull.
Thumbs Up

     WIRING TERMINAL DESIGNATIONS
AND COLOR

Did you know that Volkswagen and almost every other European car, Porsche, Audi, Saab, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes etc, has standard numbers and color coding for all of it's electrical wiring. Suppose you wanted to install an accessory, like a radio, but you only wanted the radio to have power when the ignition was on so you don't run the battery down by accident. Any black wire on the car is connected to terminal number 15 which is only "hot" or positive when the key is in the on or the start position so any accessory attached to a black wire, that is a large enough gauge (size), could be spliced into and used for this purpose.
This is only an example and maybe a bad one because later model cars  use a "load reduction relay" which is preferable and you could do serious damage to a 1996 and up VW with OBDII. If you don't know what a "KAN bus" connection is then you shouldn't attempt to install a non-VW aftermarket radio. Still you get the point I hope.
    Lets say for example any;

Wire that is solid brown in color, goes to a terminal 31 and is a direct negative connection to chassis ground. That should be easy to memorize. Brown, the color of earth, is ground.
     All solid
red wires go to terminal connections with the number 30 marked on them, are hot or positive all the time and are not fused. That is to say there are no switches between them and the positive side of the battery.

If you see a wire that has 2 or more colors and 1 color is brown then that wire probably grounds indirectly thru a relay or some other device instead of directly to the chassis or the battery.
If you see a wire with red and another color then it is most likely hot (positive) and fused and possibly provides power from a device like a relay and not directly from the battery.

A black wire with a second color receives its power indirectly also but will only be hot when the ignition switch is in the on or start position as is the case with all black wires.

With this info you can tell a lot more about the wires you are looking at without having to constantly refer to the schematics in a book or a CD ROM.

Thanks Dreamcatcher - good info there.

I just worked out that glow plug control unit relay is in the top left of my relay bank.

On vagcat, part no 443911261 is in location number 1.

From the drawing on vagcat, that doesnt make sense, it should be location 7.

Who knows - im confused!

Cheers,

Ringo

Hi Ringo
I think you may be misreading the diagram. The first bank of relays on the fuseboard body are J K L M N above the fuse strip. Your relay with 24 on the top is in position K which is the relief relay.

The relay with 19 on the top should be the control unit for intermittent wash-wipe automatic and is position M

The relay with 22 on the top is in position N and should be for the turn signal/hazard light relay

The relay bank above this starts with relay 1 and on the diesel is the control unit for glow plug / after-glow system ,which is what your photo shows.

Position 7 is the next bank up but in your case there are no relays in this bank

Note that above the main fuse and relay body, all the relays and auxillary fuses have seperate bases and holders that clip together to give positions 1---18 inc.
hope this helps.

My fuel gauge is not working, i'm useless at electrics. Anyone know which is the fuel relay, if there is such a thing. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is no relay in respect of the fuel gauge.
One side of the gauge is supplied with power from the voltage stabiliser and the other side is connected by wire to the tank sender unit, which is in turn taken to ground, ie the metalwork of the vehicle.

If the other gauges are working then it is not the voltage stabiliser.

If you disconnect the wire from the sender unit and short it against the metalwork, the guage should go to full.

If it does then the problem is the sender in the tank or a bad connection.

If not then the problem is either the wiring or a bad connection
Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice Dreamcatcher.

The temp gauge works, so I guess it's not the voltage stabiliser...

Will have a look at the sender side of things tomorrow.
