I'm trying to design a kitchen pod for my van and one idea I have is to build a pair of horizontal metal rods into the back of the cabinet, one at the top and one at the floor height, running the width of the pod from side to side, so that each rod sticks out from the side of the pob by an inch or so, at the top and bottom on each corner of the back of the pod. Then into the side panel of the van the idea is to screw a set of 4 clamps, the sorts that are plastic and round shaped like claws. The idea then is that you would push the pod back onto those 4 claw/clamp things such that each bit of rod sticking out would push into and be held in place by the plastic claw/clamp things.
Hopefully that description vaguely makes sense.
Anyway, I'm sure I've seen this claw clamp in kitchen furniture before but a google search is bringing up nothing. Does anyone know what I should be searching for to find these elusive creatures?
Thanks
Blakey

Is this so you can have a removable cabinet? Your saying you want the four ends of pole to locate in some kind of clamp on the wall of ya wagon?
I think if for some reason you wanted a removable cabinet you would be better off having a threaded piece of metal, or washer type things fitted to the wall of your van and have bolts that screw direct into them, more secure easy to remove no vibration etc. I have loads of different types at work, some are meant to weld on, some are like spiked washers with a threaded shank to screw the bolt into, all various sizes M6's upwards.
But other than that I ain't got a clue what you talking about! Edited by Nev - 19 Apr 10 at 20:31 |

I'm pretty sure these guys do modular furniture like this
Had a quick look but can't see any actual pictures of the fittings. Might be worth a look though

These are roughly what I was after: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/13985/Fixings/Tool-Clips/Tool-Clip-Pack-of-10
These would screw into the side panel of the van on each corner of the kitchen pod and then sticking out the sides of the pod would be 4 short round tubes which would push into this clips and hold the unit in place.
Cheers!

Blakey. I know what you meant but I agree with a previous comment that it would be better to actually bolt it in place.
What about floor rails, like for after market seats. Sink the rail into the floor then the connectors are attached the the cabinet and just plonk into place. Unwins I believe sell such rails. Will be as secure as a seat, just need to make a strong cabinet. I thought about doing this and then realised I had a heavy fridge, battery and other gubbins and would not want to lift it all out.

I don't want anything that permanent.
I have a kombi with seats that I take in and out. In most of the time, out when camping. The plan is that when camping I'll remove the rear seats and plonk this cabinet in against the side wall behind the driver. So it will only be in there short term.
I was planning on just bungee-ing it in place but think these clips (if I get strong ones) will be better and much neater.

What about fitting brackets into the void behind the panel. Then have matching brackets on your cabinet. Then bolt them together.
If you take the panel off there are loads of holes around the edge (M6 I think) just bolt a right angle bracket from screwfix onto the hole. Then bolt the other side into the cabinet. Edited by Ian156 - 20 Apr 10 at 16:11 |

Hmmm, yeah, not a bad idea in principle.
However I recently had the van carpeted and I'm not sure if I have access to behind the panels anymore. I'd need to check.
Also, it still means bolts and more hassle for fitting them a simple "push and click" effect that I'm aiming for with the tool clips.
Thanks for the suggestions though!

What about drawer latches/catches. Something like that but metal and more secure.

how about a split baton type arrangement? lift the unit onto the angled split batons which are attached to the bulkhead. you could put some edging strips on the sides to hide the batons and stop it sliding around when it's in place and maybe drop a couple of pins through to be extra secure. i don't think it would move about or jump out of place (as long as you don't go jumping any ravines a-team style!) this is how i think i'm going to fix my unit in place on my bus - when i get around to making one!

Use keku clips. those tool clips won't hold the block secure enough. I have loads if you want a few for the job you are welcome.

Cheers for the responses gang.
I like that split baton approach Shapey but it does mean having massive planks of wood stuck to the side of the van all the time which is a bit too unsubtle for me at the mo. I just carpeted it so I'd be covering all the carpet up all the time.
The Keku clips look good Stuckonthegrid but tey add 15mm to the depth of the cabinet by adding a 15mm gap between the van and the cabinet. As I only have 14" to play with before the cabinet is too deep (I want to put a Variotech seat system in sometime) then I need every mm I can get.
I'm now wondering if I shouldn't actually take Nev's original idea and stick some threaded bolts onto the side of the van and then slide these onto holes in the back of the cabinet where I can secure them with nuts. More hassle than what I was originally thinking but to be fair it's not huge amounts of effort to screw 4 nuts onto 4 bolts. Much more secure too - assuming the bolts are strongly attached to the wall of the van of course.
Does anyone know if you can get bolts that can be screwed into a wall such that they stick out perpendicular to the wall? Another search begins...
Cheers
Blakey

the split baton's don't have to be wood - you could do the same with ali or something? - two nice thin strips along the bulkhead sprayed to match the carpet colour?

And we have a winner! About 5mm total extra clearance I reckon. Yup - those look perfect for the job! Thanks!!
