Hi,

My 2009 1.9 T5 is in need of a cambelt, (110k miles) plus I think the DMF is going again (or it could be the driveshaft?) either way I am looking for an independent specialist to help me diagnose and do the work.  I am based in Maidenhead but willing to travel if someone can recommend a good garage please.

Thanks

A good test of a DMF is to take off from a stop uphill in reverse - if it shudders so much it feels like your engine is about to leave the van then you likely have a DMF problem.

Initial signs of a failing driveshaft spline is clonking on take-off as you let the clutch out.  When it fails you will lose all drive to that wheel.

Update:  I drove around looking for hills to reverse up (which is harder than it sounds as reversing up a main A road is not good idea!) eventually found some quiet backroads to try it on and the Van behaved impeccably!  no judder at all when taking off reversing up hill.

Next thing to check is the driveshafts I guess,  do I jack up each side of the front of the van and check for clonks/slop in the drivetrain?

If the driveshaft splines are getting worn you will usually have a clonk as you let the clutch to take off from a stop, and you can also get a clonk when decelerating as well.

What symptoms are you experiencing ?

I get the clonk on take off yes, as well as when you come on/off the throttle.  I also get a vibration in the drivetrain at around 2000 ish rpm.

I reckon Greg's right Carl.  It's normally the drivers side one but nothing is guaranteed.  I take mine out every 20-30k miles and grease them with CV joint grease.  They are both still the originals at 117k miles and 15 years and I have been towing for about a third of those miles.

Can't help really with the garage although my daughter lives in Bracknell and occasionally uses a small place there (if she can't get down here!) who have always been very fair for her Mazda Bongo and Toyota cars.  If you can't find anywhere closer I'll get the details.  There should be a good place in Maindenhead though, have a look on the local facebook groups maybe.

Thanks for the information, I think I will do it myself as I need to get down there and change the disks and pads anyway!  Is there any special tool to get the stub shaft out or does it just pull/prise out?

You will need a long allen socket down the middle of the stub shaft.  I can't remember the size, maybe 7mm.  Once undone it should just slide off.

I think I did read that you can't use the longer stub shaft from the newer model (which would have been handy) on our old model.

You will need a good long bar for the hub bolt and you can't use a six sided socket, it needs to be 12 sided.  No need to undo the ball joint nut and deal with the taper, just take out the 3 bolts that hold the ball joint to the lower arm.  The shafts can be a bit tight to come off the stub but a couple of good levers usually shift it. :-)

Don't forget to use some good axle stands 'cause T5 are seriously heavy Dead and only do the job on level concrete (not tarmac).  Good luck. Smile

replaced the driveshaft last night, one question though Do people replace the long 6mm allen headed bolt that fits the stub shaft? not sure if VW recommend you replace it or not?

I'm fairly sure that one isn't a stretch bolt so no requirement to change it.  Mine haven't come undone yet.. Tongue
