    Posted: 21 Aug 18 at 15:01
After purchasing a pair or rear wheel bearings for my VW Crafter 2012, I did plan on doing them myself, but from the research I have done, it looks like a special tool is needed so reached out to my local VW dealer for a quote.

They told me they would not fit any parts that I have sourced myself, and that their new rear wheel bearings come with a new drive shaft, and the cost for just one side is €855 euros for the parts, and €150 euros for the labour, EACH SIDE!

This means for both sides, I would be looking at over €2000 euros!  This to me seems crazy expensive, so this leads me to the question, and where i'm at right now.  I used to be a mechanic when I lived in the UK, but where I moved here, Finland in 2007, I sold all my tools and equipment, but have slowly been investing in tools etc since, and have a good collection of essentials, and have some mechanical experience.

Has anyone here ever taken on the task of renewing the rear wheel bearings on a 2.0TDi LWB VW Crafter?

I used to have a T3 Syncro back in the day, hence my membership here, and my signature below.

Not absolutely sure but I think these are the type where the hub and bearing come as an assembly so you need special tooling to remove and install without damaging -

I wouldn't think you'd need to change the driveshaft if you had the correct tooling.

Thanks, its now booked in for the fitting of the new bearings I have, and new front and rear discs, pads, and shoes, been quoted €360 for the brakes, and will be charged an hourly rate of €100 for the bearings, lets hope they don't take too long.  < ="text/" ="safari-extension://com.ebay.safari.myebaymanager-QYHMMGCMJR/6d3eb1e2//helpers/preHelper.js">

I have looked into buying the tools, and it would work out just as expensive, but pointless spending that much on tools that I would probably only use once.

Turned out it was 17mm in the end, refreshed the differential oil, but the whining sound I get when I reach 100kmh is still preset, but only there whilst accelerating.

From what research I've done, it is possible the propshafter centre bearing? The whining sound I hear when I hit 100kmh whilst accelerating sounds like its coming from the rear of the van.

Bit of an update, I've put the van in neutral, and handbrake on, and then got under the van to check the UJ's, and bearings, and these are all solid, and actually look new, so now, I suspect the whining sound is a wheel bearing, as I'm also getting some brake squealing from one side at the rear, does this sound plausible'?

Wheel bearing will wine/rumble all the time whether you are accelerating or coasting in neutral. Could be diff wine.

Pinion shaft bearing?  If only while accelerating it's a possibility.

Cheers guys, I have a feeling you could be correct, will get the garage to take the van for a drive on there motorway, at 100kmh the wine starts, but stops whining when the speed is higher or lower than that speed.< ="text/" ="safari-extension://com.ebay.safari.myebaymanager-QYHMMGCMJR/6d3eb1e2//helpers/preHelper.js">
