I'm really struggling to find an engine (code: ACL) for my van. Any tips?

There are a few places that do breakage of old vehicles dotted around. Try alfasud parts in google. He might have one. He's down near gosport. Prob not but worth a try.

Carmaggedon in Sawbridgeworth, Herts. Had one a while back. Good runner. Probably gone but worth a try.

Garage says that the cambelt is very much damaged and has come off the engine so this means the vehicle would need a new engine.

But they must have at least taken off the rocker cover to determine if camshaft is ok and valves not bent  or head off to see if that valves not hit pistons ?

well they must know what there doing but i would ask how far they have stripped down and  what exactly is damaged, perhaps they are too busy and don't want to rebuild ?

It’s damaged beyond repair, unfortunately. On a related note, does anyone know if an ACT engine would fit, or what the difference is between an ACT and an ACL?

Camshaft was in 5 pieces on my engine, valves, head and everything else were ok.

Sounds fixable, new camshafts are available, and if need be another head. i'd be inclined to take it off and see just how much is damaged, good opportunity to fit a new cambelt/injection pump anyway.

Damaged beyond repair to me would mean the block had exploded, that would be terminal lol

Uneconomical to repair yes, but not to an enthusiast, but it depends on your budget/skills/time available etc

Thanks for all the help with this, guys.

The van is stuck at a garage in Inverness while I'm down in Gloucester, so I can only really go by what advice they are giving me. They are VW specialists, and seemed the best option to go to as initially I just thought that parts could be replaced for a few hundred, but I asked for clarification on what they need and they said:

"All auxiliaries ie. Fuel pump, alternator, starter and clutch we can use off the old LT providing they are all still in working condition. What is needed is a bare complete engine for replacement."

My budget is max £3500 to get this girl on the road again, and I think rebuild costs, on top of paying for a recovery vehicle to get the van somewhere else, would end up as more than just replacing the engine. I haven't seen the damage with my own eyes, but will ask for pictures from the garage and upload them here.

I'll also see if I can get another mechanic to take a look and give me a second opinion, but might be tough to find someone, and, again, I can't move the van.

What is a VW specialist garage?
If i go to a garage belonging to a VW dealer, then i know they are spesialists in replacing old With new parts at i high cost, nothing else.

Have you considerd replacing it with a 2,5TDI I5 from an Audi 100/A6? You could of course use an engine from a T4 but you would need some parts like Manifolds from an Audi. The sump from the old engine you have to cut in 3 and remove a mid section and then weld it, to fit the New engine. There is a guy in Austria that has chiped his 140hp to 180hp. He says it runs great.

Ahhh yes, I'll do that instead, thank you!

(Maybe specialist is the wrong word and experienced is what I mean because they've worked with lots of old LTs before).

Don't know if they changed over the years but my Audi A6 2.5tdi is a V6, not a 5 pot.
Would go like s**t off a shovel though if it fits, 300bhp & 600+ft of torque is possible!!.
