OMG! Not another one! Dead
If air keeps reappearing in that clear pipe then you probably have an air leak somewhere. The air should bleed out and not return if it's simply due to being way too low on fuel. It may take quite a few turns of the starter and may empty your battery but eventually it should start.
Also bad idea to leave these beasts low on fuel as they're likely to suck some gunk from the bottom of the tank up the line.
I assume you filled the tank and have had the engine running since you ran out of fuel and the bubbles keep returning? When the engine starts and doesn't sound right do you still see air bubbles heading to to pump? Finding the leak causing the bubbles may be tricky but...
I recently saw a VE pump pissing out fuel over it's belt after someone had tried to fix the bubble problem by fitting a small in-line electric pump and a non-return valve before the VE pump. We guess the electric pump caused the VE pump to blow out a seal... so don't be tempted to fit an aux fuel pump.
Probably worth changing any hoses that look old and making sure that clips are snug and haven't cut through the hoses. For some reason the return lines can lead to bubbles in the fuel line too so worth checking those and cheap to replace 'em.
Good luck.

Hi there,

I'm fairly new to all this and starting to learn but I was wondering if I could find an easy fix before sending it to a mechanic. So basically I think I let it run out of diesel. I was busy with other things so hadn't been looking after it and was literally leaving to get new oil, fuel filter and to fill it up.

Its a 1991 LT31 diesel 6 cylinder. After it died I got it running from jumps as I used up all the battery trying to get it going. Once running it will tick over while idle but will die soon after I accelerate for a while. I can see air in a clear pipe that runs from the fuel filter to the diesel pump. I tried bleeding it from a nut that says 'OUT' on the injector pump but I read I should also try at the fuel injector points. I see similar posts on this forum but they are mostly not being able to get the van started at all. Once mine starts the engine doesn't sound right for a while and normalizes after a couple of minutes.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
