Having some fun and games with my 1.9dg bus.
Have had a new head gasket and water pump. But the coolant keeps migrating from the header tank to the expansion tank until the low coolant warning light comes on and you can see small bubbles coming from pipe attached to the dalek cap? Have had a chemical test which showed no exhaust gas in the coolant and have replaced the dalek cap. This only happens on a long motorway run, is fine on my 20 mile commute to work. It starts and runs well and it never gets hot, even on a big hill fully loaded, any ideas? |

When the coolant gets hot it is supposed to expand thro the dalek cap into the expansion tank.
When the engine cools down the coolant contracts creating a vacuum in the coolant system and the 'overflow' is supposed to be sucked back. If it is not being sucked back it is either a leaky hose between main and expansion tanks or else a cracked expansion tank. The above assumes that you don't have leaks elsewhere or airlocks.

Thanks Pete, will have a tinker this weekend and see if I can get it sorted.
Ordered a vw dalek cap just in case mine is faulty. Cheers, Ben |

A quick check on the dalek cap is to blow through it and it should go quack.
