Yes, same clips on both sides of the cross. I dont know the right translation, pressed clips/pressed seals, put in place by the press as I was told.

So it had pressed seals (never heard of those) on both sides? Guess it's main purpose was to get the owner to have it done "professionally" next time it was needing repair? Thanks for letting us know Andy.

Thats good news! I thought those crowns looked a bit too good to be peened over by a bodger.

Thank you very much for the replies, I was pretty short on time so I took the shaft to a specialised U-joint service center and they replaced both of them (and put in a new yoke).
I tried to remove them by force without results, I did not try too hard as I did not want risk bending the yoke/shaft. They told me that those "crowns" are pressed seals, so propably the proper way how to remove them is by force. When they replaced the U-joint crosses, they put the pressed seals on one and standart clips on the other, so they are interchangeable. Hopefully this will help someone solving the same problem. Thank s again! <span ="gorgias-qa-btn"=""><span ="gorgias-qa-btn-badge"=""></span></span><div ="gorgias-qa-tooltip"=""> Edited by sany2369 - 19 Apr 18 at 20:17 |

Exactly what I was thinking. Well put. Another botch job rears it's ugly head. Simple 50cent clips or spend time & effort damaging a yoke to retain a u-joint?

Looking at the first pic it looks to me as if the lip of the bore has been peened over with a centre punch or something similar to hold the cap in place, if so you could either try and remove the peened over bits of metal with an air driven carbide burr (or dremil or similar) first and then just tidy the bore up once it's dismantled, or given that you don't need the old UJ caps anyway so it doesn't matter if you score them, just drive them out using a vice (or at a push a large G clamp) and a couple of sockets, one smaller than the bore size to drive the UJ through and one just large enough for the opposite side to move into, and then dress the bores in the yoke up when dismantled.

From what I can tell it looks like your clips are simply missing. Either should have spring clip on the top of the cap or c-clip on the underside. You have neither from what I can see so maybe someone forgot to put them on or they weren't on properly and came off? Odd but the crown you mention looks like the slots have a lip which would stop the caps from moving. Is that crown the same on the opposite side? Have you tried removing them anyway? Could just be held in by rust but it looks like those lips will stop 'em moving too. let us know how you get on!
I'll check out what mine look like when I get a chance but it's not got the same shaft as yours so maybe no help again. Perhaps someone with an early LT28 can pitch in? Edited by Monster LT - 06 Apr 18 at 23:40 |

VW LT28 2.4D 1982 What seems to be holding the joint in place are those crowns (first pic) on the outside and I cant figure the way how to get them out. Also, the broken U joint dug the hole in the yolk (second pic on the downside), so I will probably be getting another prop shaft, but I will want to put in a new joint anyway. Thank you for any advice, cheers, Andy |
