Hi All,

Whilst trying to diagnose low air volume to central vents (now found on here), I managed to break the air con. I head the air con go pop then when I switched off the engine and opened the bonnet I could hear hissing (dumping the gas) and I could see some remnants of compressor oil and also a wiring loom plug floating about. On further investigation it looks like the air con has blown a hole on the sensor that sits in what I believe is the high pressure line sensor, right near the gauge connect tors.

Couple of questions, this has done this whilst on holiday in south of France, is their any danger in running the vehicle like this till I get home?

Second, is this a stealer repair of is it something I should be able to get fixed at a specialist place at a more competitive price (Ipswich Suffolk)

Lastly, it's probably my own fault because I think I turned fan completely off to in again relatively quickly so it prob did something the air con didn't like, would I have damaged anything else?

T5 130 - that's the 2.5TDI 5 cyl ? if it is then don't drive without gas in the system, the compressor if still ok can be damaged. Have someone remove the gates rubber coupling from the compressor drive. 
I think you might have been a bit unlucky, switching it on and off should not hurt anything, the HP switch should have switched off if high temp. was causing trouble, by the description it might just be a case of a faulty switch, or it might have been bumped and weakened. In any case let us know how you get on. A specialist AC repairer should be able to look after it, ask first if they are familiar with that particular system, it does have some peculiarities.

Hi

Yes it is a 2007 2.5 diesel

I have spanners and socket set with me. What's best way to remove please?

I took a picture but can't for the life of me see how to post it. The compressor is being driven al the time via a metal coupling that is in two halfs bolted together with small circa 4mm bolts.

You have to take the take the five 16mm bolts out of the lower cover of the engine mounting to get accesss  (No need to support the engine this part takes no weight. 


Then unbolt the compressor so it can move enough for you to take the rubber coupling out.  This pic shows the compressor tilted and coupling removed.  It's an easy job.

 

Two cautions though-Don't yank the the compressor about because its rubber pipe is attached to an aluminium one which you don't want to fracture, and watch out that the metal dowels which two of the three (I think it is!) compressor bolts have on them to keep aligned haven't dropped off when you bolt it back up.

I think the top compressor bolt is awkward to get at but with the right socket and extension it's fine.  Good luck.  Smile 

Edit-  Just found pic this from the instructions for fitting the coupling on mine.  It shows the compressor and it's bracket.  In this case (unlike the alternator which must come off complete with bracket) the bracket stays bolted to the block.

To get at the mounting bolts easier you will probably have to remove a vibration damper from the sub-frame just forward of the the bracket (shown as 1st pic by T5 TDI), that damper is a black cylinder type thing, it has a bolt through its centre, and there might be a cap at the end to remove.
If at all possible, and not entirely necessary, try to tape up or somehow seal up the opening where it is leaking, to stop moisture and dust/dirt from getting in, although a repairer should flush out the system anyway.

You might be right about that Stryne.  Although when ever I have taken the damper off it's just so the long engine mounting bolt (which doesn't need to come off for this job) clears, but it would make for more room as you say.  

Anyway, the easiest way to get the vibration damper off is to pop the cap off on top of the damper and, working from underneath put a 13mm 3/8 drive socket and short extension down the centre of the damper.  Then from under the bonnet link the lower a long extension until it connects up with the short one.  This way it will be off in minutes instead of faffing around for ages. :-)  Be careful it's heavy. Ouch

Thanks for the help and pictures. I have managed to get it booked in for a sensor change and re oil and gas, hopefully that's all she needs and I won't have to remove drive coupling.

Sensor never turned up and now home trying to sort out this end.

Im thinking about changing the dryer / filter at same time as changing the sensor, which looks like i now will have to order again in the UK. Does anyone have any instructions for the dryer / filter change please? Ive done a search but no luck.

G'day again Kevin,

The filter dryer should be fitted at the gas recharge stage when the system can be closed, to avoid contamination of the dryer.
Although it is a fairly simple job, it would probably be best to have  the service people do it when it goes to be recharged.

Thanks guys for all the support with information, manuals, photos etc.

I can report that after we got back i waited and waited for the sensor to turn up from the South of France (Friends were still down there), but it never showed up after 5 weeks so i cancelled the order. Not sure whether they actually ever ordered it! I ordered a new branded sensor on arrival home which showed up within 2 days and fitted that and have now had the system re=gassed and now fully functioning.

Once again thanks for your invaluable assistance.
