Hi guys,

A weird one here.. not me mm but could be :-)

My T5 2007 2.5 diesel had a flat battery a few days ago, not sure how but it's been sorned for a few months and only recently back on the road no problems.   Then wwent to it a few days ago and battery nearly dead... tried to start it and it failed.

Now after charging i get the ABS and the Traction Control light come on.  I also get after half of a mile 3 beeps and the handbrake light flashes.

It drives absolutely fine, with the only visible exception is I have no speedo now and the lights on hte dash.

I have run vcds on it and it states intermittent loss of connection ABS.  I have cleared the codes and the go off but on starting immediately come back.

I have driven it for about a mile and a half and drives beautifully, anyones help would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Paul

I'm afraid yours is a near classic description of an ABS controller failing Paul.  For some reason it often happens after a flat battery event.  It could be that it was about to go anyway and a current spike finished it off.  Dash faults often include a wildly swinging fuel gauge needle.  People mostly end up buying a complete pump (£700 ish I think) or a second hand one.  Be careful in that case it has the same fault as yours, it is not uncommon.

There are firms who will test the controller but they come back as 'beyond repair' more often than not.  If you google 'T5 Transporter ABS pump' or similar you will get loads of hits.

Does light come on straight away after resetting
Also did glow plug light come on
If so check crank sensor connection
Can cause all thes faults plus others like long time to start from cold
Etc

Hi many thanks for your prompt reply much appreciated.

I am so frustrated that this has now happened and really can't believe that this has come out of the blue!
Anyway I will dig deeper and see if I can get is sorted soon.

Hi,

The glow plug light comes on and goes off as normal / how you would expect.

If I use VCDS and clear all DTCs then on taking key out and reinserting and starting within 10 seconds the ABS and the Traction Control lights come on and then 1/2 mile down the road the flashing handbrake light comes on together with 3 short beeps.

It drives beautifully and doesnt seem to have any faults at all physically.  The DTC states for the ABS that it has sporadically lost connection to the unit. Or words to that effect..

Think it might be some black insulating tape for the dashboard :-)  (only joking)

As you have access to VCDS grab the coding for the ABS controller now while it will still communicate.  Plus you can get the correct part number of the pump while you are there. Smile

Some of the data is irreverent I know like radio aerial but I left it in so ignore pls.

Cheers

I think the supply voltage low codes probably come from your flat battery.  The rest still look typical of the pump ECU.  Multiple ABS sensor codes like that are a common symptom as well.

Still at least you have the coding and the correct pump number if you want to look for a second hand complete pump.  Or you could go for the new ECU part only, then you can change it without removing the pump or disconnecting pipes etc.  Expensive though!  http://www.banwy.co.uk/parts/abs-control-module-ecu.html

I suppose if you are happy that the ABS pump ECU is the fault and it is scrap anyway, you could run 'Output Tests' on the ABS controller if you can get it communicating reliably.  It will probably refuse to do it anyway since you have fault codes stored but the instructions should be on the screen if it will play ball.  It will run the pump and tell you to press brake, release brake etc.  It makes the valves inside work to lock and unlock individual wheels.  I don't really expect this to fix it but it's at least worth a try.  Charge the battery first.

Wonder how you got on HH because mine is doing it now!  No handbrake light on mine but the ASR and ABS lights are on permanently.  I haven't had a chance to put it my VCDS to see what codes it has or if it will even communicate with the ABS controller.  If it will play ball I will see if it will run the output tests feature I mentioned above.

I think the fault will be the ABS ECU but at £619 just for the ECU I won't be fitting one unless I have tested everything else I can.  I have had no recent low battery events, but I did have the temp gauge dropping to zero a couple of times and dash problems (usually wildly fluctuating speedo and/or fuel gauges are a common symptom of a failing ABS ECU).  I think the temp gauge was probably just the coolant temp sensor failing but we'll see..

So I now have the ABS pump or ECU, a new drivers door lock, and a new interior light plus a heater blower resistor to fit.  Along with 4 new tyres it's going to be an expensive and busy new year! Censored   Of course I will report warts and all as usual. Smile

I guess the longer you keep a vehicle and the more miles you do the more chances there are for components to fail :(

But buying a new'un doesn't mean you will get 100% reliability, just that someone else is paying for the fix.
