So apparently my head gasket is done so I am looking for advice. The garage I spoke to said they would need to do both head gaskets as the other would also be on the way out...My quote is below
However, a recon engine from JK is 'only' £1900, would it be a better option just do that? I dont know how much fitting that would be.
Also, the van still seems to be driving OK, it just overheats easily as I have to keep topping up coolant - I have a camping trip next weekend about an hour away, can I still risk it? Thanks for any thoughts... Will QUOTE.... does this look reasonable? Labour 672.00 (12-14 hours labour, 14 hours quoted) Headsets x2 206.55 (103.27 each) Skim/crack test 190.00 (95.00 each) Push rod tubes 103.68 (12.96 each) Oil filter 5.26 Oil 40.00 Water pump 36.52 (may not be necessary) Antifreeze 15.00 Total 1269.01 Vat 253.80 TOTAL £1522.81

No idea about the quote. Not familiar with water cooled flat fours. They have a reputation for being an arse to strip down. Looks pretty steep though? Probably just realistic.
But if you want to keep that engine then don't drive it an hour. The chances are you'll cook it and risk damaging pistons and bores just adding expense. Also risking damage to the cooling system, rad and heater matrixes. Edited by ob1 - 22 Jun 17 at 18:45 |

Thanks for that, been doing a bit more reading and seems to make much more sense to buy a recon such as from Elite Engines. £1000 seems pretty good. How long would it take to fit do you think?

Bare in mind your new engine will still
Need some of the above Oil Oil filter Anti freeze Water pump Labour will be similar to above, perhaps more, clutch may be a good idea. The £1k engines could be fine |

Thanks. I just got it back from the garage in working order. I swapped the engine with one from Simon Davey which seems good. Was cheaper than changing the head gaskets even with fitting, new water pump, new clutch and me doing a full service!
I now have a spare DG engine with a busted head gasket (failed the sniff test) - is anyone interested?
