This might be a daft question but... its a 1988 petrol auto, does it just need to be in park to start? Or is it park and press the brake? handbrake on?

whack your stick in park or neutral and it should start off the key if not wiggle your stick back and forth! oo-err! matron! etc etc!

Park or Neutral. The inhibitor switch on the gear selector can wear out over time, hence the stick wiggle.
