quick update,

with some running around the long block os together, events over took things and I took all the prepared parts to Rob Judge at RNJ motorsport who did the final bug fixing and assembly. I picked up the block last week and am now doing the build up on the modified 2.1DJ.

it's a simple enough engine but will make a little more and maybe live ok.

2.1 DJ
custom h-beam rods
new german high comp barrels and pistons,
new ported AMC 2.1 heads
CP performance 2280 cam with straight cut cam gear
SCAT 1:1.25 ratio rockers
new lifters etc

pistons, rods, crank, pulley, flywheel, pressure plate all balanced

the Bosch style hi pressure fuel pump in the bus is insanely loud. It's mounted under the rear floor between the chassis rails in a damped holder but still pierces through the whole cabin.

had a fun morning with James at Stateside tuning, picked up some custom H beam rods and had James dynamically balance the crank, pulley, flywheel and pressure plate. Letft the case with him overnight for dipping in the hot tank.

James at Stateside tuning balancing the rotating assembly, pulley, camgear (fancy CB straight-cut ones to go with the new 2280 cam), crank, flywheel and pressure plate.

I also dropped the heads off at a local head specialist to have them reface the sealing surfaces and install new valve guides

progress is happening.

I know what you mean, but then I can buy a ten year old M3 BMW for less than the price of a rotten out T3...

it's a strange and twisted world :D

I built the turbo motor for the blackone up at RaceShack - a massive labour of love at the time, hours of headwork, solid lifter conversion, turbo cam, straight cut cam gear, custom H beam rods, KEP stage II clutch, rotating assembly all dynamically balanced etc etc.

but a 2.1dj with basic mods will give you usable basic power - exhaust, lifters, induction etc

The Don mate :) (beige one he had off Mr Walker I think)

I totally forgot he owned that turbo one :).

Problem with the DJ engines and all the kit to make them work, is that it's a lot cheaper to throw an AGG from a Mk3 GTi in, especially when you've got all the "conversion" bits off a diesel.

I'd quite like a 2.1 DJ in a panel van though. LOL I'd add some kind of duck whistle to the home brewed turbo that I'd end up throwing on :p

Yeah, I did.. it sat too low and never ran right, so I sold that on and decided to go diesel.  Then remembered that I hate diesel engines so used a lot of the parts go to GTi instead.  I'll be happy with 115-120bhp in the van... Hub's old one with the 2.1 DJ went plenty well enough, so if I can get close to that kind of performance, I'll be happy.

Besides, I've got a 1303 for making quicker.. (Subaru Turbo)

good to hear the brown things's still going, i thought you had put a subaru into it?

I'm glad to see it's still out there doing its thing :)

Things are good mate.  I've still got the rusty brown heap.  Currently spending a lot of money on mig wire and gas, and bits for an AGG engine.

I have to do all the same work on new AMC/KS heads, the valve seat area machining is mismatched to the port casting, they need about half a day's carbide burr action per pair just to clean them up...
I will keep on grading used spring sets until I can find decent quality. Not keen on going backwards an using type 1 stuff. I can get them made but minimum quantities make it an expensive exercise.
Have I missed anything?

Head work continues, inlet ports and exhaust, careful unshrouding of valves and then they will go off to be resurfaced.
here are two inlet ports after the first run, removing lumps, bumps and casting marks and a little work around valve guides. The machining marks and angles in the bowl below the inlet and exhaust valves is particularly poor and took a lot of work to smooth the transitions. I'm not going for anything radical - just smoothing transitions and cleaning up to help flow. Where I can i'm opening up the short side transitions as the exhaust particularly has a really tight bend directly after the valve.

The surface corrosion is quite pronounced in places but the valves, seats and heads in general are good. When reassembly happens I will do a mild port match against the throttle body manifolds.

the torque is pleasantly flat all the way and with valve adjustment and some better tuning it should see a little more. The throttle bodies and the merged exhaust help.

the cam in the 2.1dj is worn so i am shopping for a replacement, probably the CB eagle 2280
http://www.cbperformance.com/product-p/2280.htm?CartID=1
with new hydraulic lifters. I did a solid lifter conversion on a wbx years ago and the machining starts getting a bit involved. several places are advertising repalacement dual springs for WBX - any recommendations ? (I believe that type 1 HD springs will fit but way need larger retainers?
what lifters did you use with the newmans? expensive?

Thats a pretty good hp improvement in % for a used MV!
Peak power coming in at stock rpm so no suprises there. The cams are always knackered, I have one here with a genuine 140kkm and the ramps have just started to fail due to scuffing.
Got a source for good quality valve springs that will let a wbx rev a little more? I am only looking for 6k max on a 2.1, no more.
I had some hydro cams done by Newmans, more aggressive lobe ramps (you cant go mad because of the lifter diameter) and they make the 2.5 into a torque monster!

however, i think the 2.1mv may be more than a little limited for tuning, it was a stock 2nd hand unknown find. It makes good power for a low compression engine (stock is circa 90bhp) but it is always going to be limited.

so i've torn down the old 2.1 high compression dj motor that was in it ready for a rebuild. all looks good apart from a broken head stud - that appears to have been welded on top of another broken stud - if you did this you should be ashamed !
i'm in the middle of porting heads and will slowly work through checking and balancing everything.
the plan is a stock rebuild with a mild cam, new lifters, dynamic balancing, some ratio rockers and TLC

semi sequential,

got it mostly dialled in now and it hot starts fine and cold starts well enough.
I took it to JPR Racing north of bristol for a few hours on a rolling road to bug fix and trouble shoot and baselined the map for safety and did a few power pulls.

apparently it makes 101 bhp and 125ft lb of torque. power dies over 4200rpm with what looks like valve float that needs to be looked at. I've a few things to fix -  change the throttle linkage, lifter pre-load, change fluids etc then will go back to tune for power and see what happens.
