the recommended oil seems to have changed or be in question for my van. when i took it in for service in 2008 the vw dealer gave me a bottle of castrol edge 507.00 foc for top ups (never needed it as it doesn't use any oil). anyway i used VW to do the oil changes/service when required except the last two which i undertook myself, second one just done.  i used quantum longlife III 504.00/507.00 but when i look on the quantum site it tells me pd engines require quantum pd oil (505.01?) . is my engine a PD (high pressure injection)? from what i can see on the web it is. the castrol site refers me to main dealer when i enter my reg number, strange as it used to say castrol edge 5w30 507.00was backwards compatable with all previous vw oils. halfords do not have an oil that they recommend but they do sell castrol edge and advise to go in and ask their advice. opie still recommend castrol edge 5w30 504.00 507.00 "Castrol EDGE 5W-30 is equally suitable for petrol and diesel vehicles where performance specifications VW504 00 and VW507 00 are demanded. Plus Castrol has managed to meet the requirements of most previous VW oil specifications making it suitable for new and older engines.

Use in place of Castrol Formula SLX LongLife II (now discontinued).

Castrol EDGE 5W-30 FST fully synthetic engine oil can be used instead of Castrol edge professional 5W-30 FST, products that are mainly only available from main dealerships and are generally a lot more expensive with similar / same specifications"  But notice the "meet the requirements of MOST previous VW oil specifications making it suitable for new and older engines. so whats going on am i using the right oil or not.? thanks in advance

All I know for what it is worth is the 5pot PD engines require a specific oil.

Failure to use can result in cams wear.

We have a few PD's and they have separate oil from the T5.1's, labelled and on the shelf with the reg numbers its to be used in.

A mate owns a motor factors and gets us the specific PD oil.

I think so, no cam belt, gear driven.

Don't use dodgy diesel, very expensive fix if u do.

If I am right the injector pump in each injector is driven by the camshaft action so high load on the cams, hence special oil.

i use regular non supermarket diesel. it  pi55es me off  if its incorrect why did VW give it to me to use in the first place? but to be honest it's no surprise the reason i started doing my own oil and filter was because of VW's ineptness/pi55taking. the engine still runs sweet so hopefully no harm done. the oils always been changed within 12000 miles max.
 when i took it in for my first service VW asked if i wanted 10000 mile or the longlife regime. i told them longlife oil every 10000 miles they told me i would be wasting my money as 10000 mile intervals only require semi synthetic oil. how does that work?

The T5 2.5l (R5) lump is a "pump duse" (PD) engine, I suggest using a VW507.00 compliant oil.

IIRC there has been some discussion here about the early build motors using an earlier VW spec 506.01 - an advanced search with "any date" will probably find it. The cams and followers on the early engines were a bit "delicate" and didn't tolerate anything less than optimum lubrication.

ok thanks. i have been using quantum longlife III 5w30. but the tps website states that it is not for use in pd engines. Note: Quantum PD Diesel must be used in Volkswagen vehicles with PD Diesel engines on Time/Distance servicing. ( quantum PD Diesel is 5w40   for VW 505.00  505.01 )

I would keep using 507.00 oil in an R5 engine.  I think the 505.01 is an older oil specification.

I'm with Greg.  507.00 for a your DPF engine.  Personally I wouldn't  use any other spec oil except 507.00 even if you change it annually.  

It could be that the 505.000 and 505.01 specs are actually ok for annual oil changes but I'm certaintly not risking it!  It could be that the advice on the Quantum site should have read 505.00 CAN be used rather than MUST be used and it has been confused in translation from German.

The longlife regime is variable depending on what the engine decides.  It counts engine starts (I'm up to about 6000 plus in total!) and it knows if they are cold starts, plus it monitors the soot loading of the oil.  From this it should put the service light on at between 9000 and 20,000 miles. It doesn't always work perfectly in practice especially if the service warning hasn't been set up correctly in the dash, either at the factory or by a garage.

I use that Mobil 1 ESP 5-30 in my 2.5tdi Audi. Not PD technology but damn good oil...
Change it every 5 - 6.5 k miles. The engine loves it... expensive mind.

If that is a VW 507.00 oil, then yes.  If it isn't specifically stated as 507.00 on the container then I wouldn't use it.

The Mobil site reports approvals against a range of manufacturer requirements, including VW 507.00. 

Encouraging. It's also low ash, suitable additives for catalyst/dpf life,etc

I'll take a peek for 507.00 compliance when next in the parts dept.
