Hi.
I need to top up some oil in the gearbox after the winter, small drops of oil on the ground from the back of the gearbox.

But in which of these two holes can I top it up? I dont have the tool for the one to the right, can I remove the black plug to the left and fill oil as well?

So, can I fill in both or just one of them?

Thanks.

THE one to the right is the only one for this the hex male adaptor is not that specialist to borrow or buy fairly cheaply .

The one on the right is inline with the flywheel and clutch. NO OIL there.

Also means that the oil seal in the end of the gearbox is not doing its' job properly.

Specific tool needed - 17mm Hex Drain Plug Key (same for gearbox sump underneath) U can use an allen key if you got a 17mm laying about... or make something similar from nuts n bolts welded. I picked one up for £3.50 that fits into a female 14mm Hex for a wrachet.

When you open the filler plug if oil pours out a bit then drips out your level is OK. If nothing drips then top up with the correct gearbox oil (80W90 - GL5 / SAE 90 on mine) until it's dripping out.

Just to be clear, the port that you have circled in red is the place to fill 😀

Thanks. Should I use GL4 or GL5 oil? Haynes says GL4 and Monster LT said GL5, also seen couple of more say GL5, so which one to go with? 4 speed, 2.0 petrol.

In my experience GL4 is the way to go for the older gearboxes in LT1's.
It's a little kinder to the softer metals in the gearbox.

If I recall correctly my manual suggests GL4 too.

As to my GL5 statement earlier... Embarrassed Actually I can't find any reference to the gearbox oil my '93 TD ought to be using. (apart from haynes which is from the old '82 edition which does indeed specify GL4 SAE80 (not SAE90). Guess I got that idea of GL5 SAE90 from the diff. oil specification or from a motor factors database. Apparently GL5 causes damage to copper, brass and other yellow metals. Lots of gears oils say GL4/GL5. Now that's another confusing point. Some advice I've read is to make sure the label only says GL4... and theres more choices depending on operating temperatures 70W90 or 80W90? On a vw tdi forum I read most VW manual gearboxes use GL4. Partsbase.org specifies VW G 00500005 which apparently is a synthetic 75W90... and thats another thing. synthetic, semi or mineral.
It does get confusing!

Old thread but thought I'd give this a mention.
According to a few sources , the later Mk1 LT 5-speed box should be using G060726A2 - NOT G005000 as partsbase and other free online ETKE's state. G005000 is for the 4-speed only! I got this info from an independent motor factor that specialises in VAG only. I later confirmed this with two official VW & Audi dealers. Most the other motor factors I've spoken to say 75W90GL4. G060726A2 is a single grade 75W GL4.This was based on my vehicle reg. I couldn't find out if G060726A2 is full synth, semi or mineral but febi sell one under that part number (and various other VW part numbers). Both G060726A2 & G005000 are available still with VW packaging for a decent price alhough the later is almost twice as much. Brickweks sell a 75W80 GL4 for T3's and say it's for LT's also. So who do you trust?
Please pitch in if you have found any info to confirm.
