    Posted: 06 Aug 12 at 18:50
Hi Guys, not been by in a while! So I have had the warning lamp come on for the exhaust gas? What are my options? I've had a look underneath at the exhaust and no obvious damage or holes. No extra noise. However, I did go over a plastic coke bottle on the M1 the other night and it did whack underneath. Can this warning lamp be reset? Will I have to get a vagcom diagnosis?

Any help would be much appreciated, I tried a search on this but not much came up.

What wagon are you running. T5 or T5.1?

I would check the sensor wires down onto the exhaust at eh back of the engine.

I suspect a T5.1 as the under shield would have protected most things on  the T5.

Would the light be the DPF?

It's a T5 (2006) 1.9 108, no DPF. Yes the T5 has a belly pan so it's pretty well shielded engine end.

Check and clean the connections and if that don't work a new sensor or gamble on the stealer???

The new and ripped off T5.1 doesn't get under belly protection.

Thanks, a little guidance to exactly where the sensor is? Does it unclip to clean?

You don't have one if you definitely don't have a DPF.........

OK, so why have I a light on? Is there a sensor at all, I suppose there must be if there is a warning light on? An exhaust pressure sensor maybe?

Out of curiosity, are your brake lights still working?

Yes. This is very frustrating. At first I thought this icon was engine management, had a bit of knee jerk reaction and got booked into a dub specialist tomorrow for a diagnostic. Not sure it's going to need it now?
I think for piece of mind though it wouldn't be a bad idea. I don't mind a dabble underneath the van but this is probably a bit to far for me. I best let someone who knows take a look.

Perfect time buy either a VagCom cable for about 7 quid or a hand held code reader for about 16 quid....waaaaay cheaper than paying a garage to tell you the fault code plus you can then read any future fault codes without guessing what's wrong.

I had a vague idea that some non-dpf engines might have still had a sensor in the exhaust - lambda probe possibly to measure oxygen level ?

The DPF versions have an extra two pressure sensors - one before and one after the DPF to tell when it is getting clogged.

By the way, will a code reader tell me a fault code for the exhaust gas warning? Does it run through the ECU too?
The Lambda probe, anyone know it's location? I would presume just after the manifold on the main down pipe?

Ahh ok I see the cables, but the software? I only have a macbook these days. Does it need PC? I could borrow a laptop.

TPS reckon there is only one sensor on my exhaust, the lambda probe just in front of the CAT. £134.28 plus vat!!!
Any tips...
Do you reckon I should just get it checked out or just bite the bullet and change it? I'll do it myself if I can.

If you install Windows7 it will work but in this instance you might be better off with a hand held reader.

Garages charge £35+ just to read and delete the codes....you can do the same for yourself(and anyone else you know)for £16....no brainer really.

Oh...don't be tempted to buy a code reader cheaper from Hong Kong or China as you could end up paying more than what they're available here for due to the import duty.

Strange one that Dub.  My 04 non-DPF has a cat but no sensors.  I'm not sure the dash on mine even has a warning light.  Are you sure it doesn't have a DPF?  Your van is right on the change over.  What is your engine code?
