Hi everyone,
I just bought a Westfalia joker high-top (1991) with 1.6td engine and 5-speed transmission (JX 1,6l 4-cyl). It is not fast but I'm wondering if it should be faster. Right now top speed is something like 80-85 km/h. Here is one webpage which shows some information about that model: http://www.camperexperience.nl/en/renting/campertypes/vw-t3-high-top.html Are these facts too optimistic? |

80 - 85 sounds about right for a 1,6 TD.

No, no, that's kph he's quoting, not mph. that's like 50mph. That's is slow, but how and where did you test for top speed? If it was a gentle incline with a strong head wind, then yes I could see a high top struggling, but realistically you ought to be able to pull 70mph, so about 110-120kph in reasonable conditions.

Sorry my fuck up!
80 - 85 MPH is about right, I used to see 140 KMH on the clock and the German log book states 127 Kmh as max speed. |

I tested it on a flat highway and the weather was also quite nice. All I can say is that it is pain to drive over 55mph. Is there a problem with my turbo? Should I hear some turbo noise when accelerating?
Other facts about my car: - blue smoke on cold start (hard to say what is excessive) - mileage now 150993 (miles) / 243 000 km Services done: - oil and filter change (148756 miles / 239 400 km) (5th of September 2011) - timing belt change (142915 miles / 230 000 km) - water pump (143847 miles / 231 500 km) - air filter (144593 miles / 232 700 km) - fuel filter change (150185 miles / 241700 km) I know the brick yard's buyers guide tips. Blue smoke could sign of worn engine, turbo seals, valve stem oil seals, worn piston rings (none are cheap). |

Does if have rev counter? If it does what RPM reading was you getting at 55?
Failing that what is the gearbox code? |

based on my van....with its JX i think 80-85mph is nailing it. mine never got past 75. 65 to 70 would be my top end given the right conditions. ....the engine would be revving its bag off to get there with std gearing.

So any ideas what's wrong with my westy? When accelerating it goes like following steps
1st gear 0-20 kph 2nd gear 20-40 kph 3rd gear 40-60 kph 4th gear 60-80 kph 5th gear 80-85 kph |

how does it sound at 80-85? does it sound like its revving high?
what size tyres are on it? gearbox code would definately be helpful just to make sure it doesnt have a 1.7D box in it or something... my old westy (pop top) would sit at 130 quite happily and push 140+ if i abused it.

From where I can check the gearbox code? ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/vfcahfl6qqae1im/engine.jpg )
It is definitely not revving high at 80-85. Just like it would not like to accelerate more. (like there is no more space to push the pedal down). |

Hi
Mine is happy to do 60 - 65 MPH all day and that just over 3K RPM, on the rare times I do put my foot to the floor it will do 75MPH.
On a long trip I get 45MPG at a steady 60 - 65
By the way mines a pop top
I can hear my turbo whistle if I listen hard but you don't feel it pull
Cheers
Gary

Standard jx spec. You should make 70 to 80 fine.
So turbo vacuum pipe to lda leaking? Turbo waste gate opening too soon? Poor fueling / timing? You just need to start checking things off one by one really? |

I would be looking at the pump timing ,checking for boost/boost leaks from the turbo also worth checking the boost pipe to the lda on the pump to make sure it`s operating the lda
I don't know what the emission laws are like in Finland but it is quite common for some people to turn down the fueling to pass emissions test`s instead of dealing with the more expensive replacement of injector nozzles so it could be worth looking at the fuel adjustment screw on the pump to see if it has been tampered with/ adjusted Also check you are getting full travel on the throttle lever on the pump

Check your brakes / handbrake make sure they are not binding as this will kill your power and speed. Make sure you are getting full throttle as well.
