i purchased a t5 130 kombi in june this year! all went well untill 2 months ago.
disaster engie management light loss of power dropping out of cruise control ect.
i collect cars and bikes so decided to have a quick look myself.code reader suggests seat belt warning light !! so no hope there.
bit the bullet into local vw dealership (they service my t5 4 motion for work no getting stuck for me)
vw CARRS IN INDIAN QUEENS informed me dpf failed and turbo low boost.SHIT 1700 QUID.not having that removed dpf in garage cut out dpf welded up pipe sent to CELTIC TUNING ROCHE
200 QUID LATER ALL DONE drove off forcourt onto a30 dropps out of cruise no lights no fault codes.
WHAT IS GOING ON GARAGE AS MUCH HELP AS TITS ON A BORE PIG OR HEARES ON A BEETLE.
BACK HOME CRYING NOW.
new specialist now. local bloke said he was the best its the turbo vanes 1500 quid.!!!!

drive up road cruise on at 70 you getting the gist of this yet dropps out of cruise into limp home!!!
Fuck**G vans going up for sale now!
but wait i shall go back to basics
lots of posts on web for this problem and i may have found the solution, after many so called specialists, dealers and twats some mentioned.
checked the non return valve for the vac pump before the turbo control valves seems ok.
but for the sake of it replaced with brke pipe cut to 20mm(maybe 10pence).
drive down road van perfect.
BE WARNED SPECIALIST MY ARSE 1000 POUNDS OUT OF POCKET FOR 1 12.50 NON RETURN VALVE.

thanks sorry for the bad spelling ,grammar ect but am quite chuffed i found the fault and wanted to warn and help other t5 owners.i should have checked these things first but you are so worried it will be a disaster
you trust the main dealer and specialists.
they all tell you different things and you end up having no confidence in any of them!!

Why don't you just edit your first post to include all the hindsight stuff. Then it could be moved to the T5 Modifications section as a how-to.

sounds like a good idea i will edit the section in the new year if i can navigate the site.
but please if you have a problem check the simple things.
after all the checks and removing turbos inlet manifolds ect it would seem some of the problems affecting modern diesels are vacume related i will get the proper readings for the vac pump and post soon.
but dont assume a code reader or vag dealer/specialist will have the answer, the dealer/ specialist make money selling parts and 20% on a 700 quid turbo is more profit than a couple of hours carrying out proper old school diagnostics.
sorry to sound negative but hard lesson to learn.
ps i own an ac3000 me with a gearbox made of cheese a norton 850 commando and a triumph vittesse so you would think i know all about unreliability.
just got some more lessons

Hi Ed
Glad you got your van sorted mate - although it was an expensive lesson. I have the "expensive" mod fitted to mine now (piece of brake pipe instead of the one way valve) and it is definitely running smoother with better power delivery on take off. Unfortunately the bastard thing cut out on me on the A30 yesterday - switched off and then on again - no problems. I guess i'm gonna have to bite the bullet and remove and clean the turbo. I will contact you in the next few weeks for a few tips on how to do that?? Cheers Ed and I'm glad you like the forum - been invaluable to me since I bought my van. Fuzz |

Great job Eddy! Thanks for taking the trouble to post. So just to be clear, your fault was that the vacuum supply (at the non return valve) was partially blocked which must have stopped the variable vanes on the turbo from working properly. Good stuff! It's what this board is all about for me.
Edit- Just noticed about your Triumph Vitesse. A blast from the past for me. I'm only jealous of that nice smooth straight six engine, nothing else though! Edited by T5 TDI - 05 Jan 11 at 22:27 |

This could prove to be a VERY useful post - sort of describes what the issue with my T5 130 could be too. Basically, I can be cruising along on a steady throttle between 40-60mph and either drop a cog for an overtake or just maintain a steady throttle, and engine power just dies away leaving me struggling to maintain 40mph in any gear. If I stop, switch engine off, wait a few mins, and restart, it "fixes" it. It happened twice early last year prior to me fitting a new air-flow meter, and once again a few months after fitting the new air-flow meter, but hasn't done it again in 3 months / 2k miles of driving.
I'm VERY mechanically inept hence have no idea where this vaccuum supply pipe is and what to replace! Any pointers or a guide or photos as to what I should be looking at would be much appreciated. Cheers Ally |

That sounds like it might be the ECU going into "limp-home" mode after detecting excess turbo boost. Most common cause for what you have described (particularly on vans that are usually driven fairly gently) is sticky vanes on the variable vane turbo. Plenty of T5 threads on this subject.

Thanks very much, I'll have a search when I get a chance before asking further Q's. I've not really investigated it much as it's been such a rare occurence that it's not been a major issue so far, but we're planning a 3-week, 3k mile trip in a few months and the last thing I want is the engine going wrong far from home.
I take that as a personal insult though: "usually driven fairly gently" doesn't really describe my style |
