That will be 62 Years as the 60th anniversary was held in Hannover in Oct 2007.

according to the history on the vw site, "the box on wheels" was first sketched in 1947 but didn't go into full production until 1950

so i guess both are correct... well, sort of Confused LOL

The BBC site does say 60yrs of the campervan though, not the transporter
