Had my AC serviced this week. It was advised (Garage=£) that a regas would not be suitable as it was it's first AC review from new (4yrs old). They said I needed a full service, not too bad £70. I must admit it does blow a bit colder now, once the engine warms up. Not really sure what it involved, a big green Bosch machine was hooked up to it and a can of smelly stuff grenade'd into the cab!

Hi there. The 2.5 has a direct drive compressor which makes retro fitting a kit a little more interesting' and as "Transporter" says the control side is more complicated.
It could be done but unless the base vehicle is a specialist converted thing I don't think it would be worth the investment ( and this coming from someone who makes his living from repairing vehicle ac)
cheers Ade

I'm the exact opposite... My aircon is never switched off on any of my vehicles, the high humidity in the UK really knocks me for six.. |

I remember hiring a car in Spain years ago......by Christ it was hot! Thankfully the car had aircon which made journeys much more comfortable. I want to go camping in France and Spain in the summer, therefore aircon would be a real Brucey! |

How long since your refrigerant weight was checked? You may benefit from a recharge.. I prefer manual aircon to automatic aircon (Climate control) as I have more control over the cabin temp and which vent the air blows out of... Having a bulk head in the van, then on a longer trip I have to have the blower set to minimum with the air blowing out of the demister vents otherwise it gets too cold... If I had CC then the system would be constantly be "Hunting" on and off... |

Cheers for the link Bananabus.
Always a bit nervous when they don't display prices. Found one on ebay £1375...bloody hell...... they are specialist units though.
I have really good screen insulation panels. Helps retain the heat in winter, so should help with the aircon in the summer. >>>......leave the side door open and invest in a fan it is then |

I have A/C, it's not all that! Takes an age to get cold, don't have climate control which is what you really need. It is better than none at all but probably not 1.2k's worth.

I've got a 240v set up- shoreline, fusebox etc. Integral aircon for whilst driving...looks like that option would prove too expensive. Intended the portable to be used whilst parked up and wired to the grid. |

Errm.... the portable units are all 230v... How would you power it? Is the aircon for whilst driving your van or is it a camper and to be cooled when you are parked?

Cheers for your advice chaps.
Mines a 2.5. I heard it could be in the region of £1200...which of course is quite expensive. I was also thinking of buying one of those portable aircon units, but they all require venting. Cutting holes in the side of my van this is something I didn't want to do |

Anything is doable but it is a pretty big job and expensive as the kit would have to be genuine VW, I'm not aware of any aftermarket kits available for the T5 but if anyone does one then Diavia will. Another idea may to be to strip the aircon out of an accident damaged van as it will have all the bits that you will need. I think that you may get away without having to strip the dash out of the T5 as I think that the evaporator may be a modular unit, rather like the ones on most cars from the far east...
You don't say if your van is a 1.9 or a 2.5 but I would hazzard a guess that the 1.9 would be easier to do as the compressor refrigerant control is mechanical rather than electrical, thus needing the control to come from either the ECU or a separate module... Unless you really love your van then trade it... |
