    Posted: 24 Feb 10 at 11:48
My horns a rusted mess that just fell apart because the MoT is due.  Just been flitting on Ebay and found a klaxon horn for 3.95.  They sound funny, bit of a toy etc. and one of my mates got one from Vanfest last year and it's loud enough.

Question is.....is it ok for MoT??  Be a bit of a pisser if it's not.
When there's always biscuits in the barrell, where's the fun in biscuits??

Not true!

Must be single tone or twin tone ie. two notes sounded simultaneously. (eg. Stebel Nautilus).

Two tone (illegal) can only be used by the emergency services.

I spose that means the klaxon is a 2 tone then.  Back to the scrappy I go, at least it's only pennies!

What if you have a ''normal'' road horn plus fit an additional Klaxon. There's a Beetle from the Wigan area that has a set of diesel locomotive horns fitted, one under each front wing. It has a hefty compressor/air reservoir to work them & they are LOUD! Smile

My van would have failed the MOT with the Klaxon, but I had left the original horn attached so he just swaped plugs and warned me citing the 'single tone' rule. personally I think it depends on if your tester has a sence of humor or not
If you can't go fast go LOUD!!

For many years posh cars like Jaguars & big Rovers had twin tone horns. Nowadays lots of cars have them eg. my Xsara. I think the T4 has one as standard, at least it looked like one when I had the bonnet open & was checking the oil.

Trouble is the MOT is still a bit Subjective,
What passes at one station dont necessarily pass at another. Shocked

The thing is that it shouldn't be down to the MOT tester to decide what type of horn to pass/fail at MOT time. The types of horn that are legal or illegal will be stated in the Road Traffic Act or Construction & Use Regs. Do decibels come into the equation ie. excessively loud?

That means that every UK registered car with a twin tone horn eg. BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, big Rovers & lots of more modest cars have illegal horns & invalid MOTs. Shocked Wink Smile
