your local motor factors might do one, where you buy the new one at a discount for giving them the old one for refurbishment.

Hi. There is a serious lack of " How to remove and replace a T5 alternator" on a 1.9 engine in this Tech section. Can you enlighte me? it looks like the worst yet.

This ridiculously way overpriced unit is easy/hard to remove, 19Tdi.

Make sure of your radio code first etc

Disconnect battery - neg first.

Take a 17 spanner put it on top of belt tensioner - you can see ear sticking up - spanner goes on there. Pull on it towards you.

If you have aircon, careful when you pull on spanner to let go belt.

Loosen 2 or 3 bolts holding alt to block, easy accessable! with a socket. Don't remove bolts yet, let them hold in wiv a couple of threads - hand loose.

Loosen bolts holding wires at rear, and unclip connector. Push in tab with small screwdriver.

Remove bolts and piece of trash, sorry alternator is loose.

That's the easy part, now for the hard part - getting it out.

Too many Johnnie Walker's later, I just removed the plastic pipe on the block - lower rad hose and removed it that way. Move the aircon pipe out the way, do not bend the ally part of the pipe. There
probably is an easier solution, but I was in a hurry and totally pissed off.

Refitting is simply more or less reversal of above.

Another howtodo Clap  Well done Dave Smile  You are ok with the radio on T5s as Vdub says, when you reconnect the battery and switch the radio on the radio will show 'LEARN' and come back on after a few seconds because it knows it's own ECU. Cool

Just to add a couple of tips:  When you take the alternator belt (poly belt) off sketch out on a piece of paper the route it takes especially if you have A/C because it can get confusing when you put it back!  The spring loaded tensioner takes a fair pull against the spring before it releases, you can help it by pulling on the belt but keep your fingers away from the pulleys in case it lets go suddenly.  When you have the tensioner at full streatch there is a little hole to keep it there.  A big fat split pin or a drill bit stuck in it will do the job.

You are lucky you don't have a 5 cylinder Ouch LOL
