Topic: Table rubbing on seat backrest Posted: 11 Sep 08 at 20:30 |
One thing which has bugged me since i bought the westy last year is that when i swing the table away from the stored position, it digs into the seat backrest as it swivels round. Is this normal or is one of the rock n roll brackets misaligned somehow?
It's an '89 California BTW.

Mines just the same, bit of a pain in the arse to get the table out but i suppose the seat back is pretty soft so it shouldn't matter too much or cause any damage. I dont think.??.

Same problem here. That table is far to large to be used practically as is the one for the front seats (if fitted).
So I put the front table where the long back table was. That gives enough room to get it in/out easily and is still large enough for 2 to 3 to eat at.
I then chopped down the big table by 2/3rd's and used that for the front seats.
(if you can understand all that!).

One less job to do then, seems like it's pretty normal so no need to start stripping the hinges apart.

Just a matter of swinging it the right way - never had any problems really.

Spotted this on TheSamba.com this morning; might have a look at modifying the bracket:
So...this afternoon, i went for a tinker in the garage and found a length of tube which was a snug fit on the OUTSIDE (rather than the inside in the link above) of the table leg...it was also a perfect fit over the outer diameter of the shoulder on the plastic boss on the bottom plate. So with a bit of careful measuring i managed to cut a length of tube which fits perfectly between the bottom plate and the underside edge of the clamping pad on the inside of the top mount...completely reversible, nothing required modification. I can now raise the table approx 450mm to access the two storage hatches under the table and also swing the table out without catching the rear seat backrest. Result

Some pictures to illustrate the slightly different method I used. First, the table elevated showing the access to the two storage cupboards underneath. The table will lift approximately 500mm, but for access to the two cupboards, you don’t need to raise it anywhere near full height. I managed to find a length of tube which was just (0.5mm at a guess) bigger internally than the bush fitted to the bottom table mount which fits in the lower storage cupboard. (easily removed, one nut & one bolt). The westy table leg is also a snug fit inside this length of tube.
The top mount has a clamping pad inside, which obviously locks the table in place when you tighten the knob. The critical measurement is from the underside of this pad to the top face of the lower mount. The new length of tube can’t move up past the pad and can’t drop out of the bottom of the top mount (so long as your measuring is correct).
The top of the new tube needs to be ground & shaped slightly to clear the two small indents on the top mount.
Once assembled, the tube fits inside the top mount and butts up against the underside of the clamp pad.
Once everything fits together like this…
If you’ve measured correctly, the assembly can be refitted and all bolts/nuts refitted.
Even the cupboard base still fits without modification.

I used a bit of tubing i'd saved off an old rotary clothes line; you know the script, never throw anything away that looks like it might be slightly useful in the next 7 years!

Plenty of clearance on my table............ it`s stood at the back of the garage !
I use a folding table in the `van, that either stands in the floor area for use if the weather`s crap, or stands in the awning if the suns`s shining Just long enough to be able to be used when people seated at the rear seat and the front swivelled seat at the same time.
