Possibly looking at a recon motor for my dad's 1.9 DG van. Been looking at Remtec and also The Engine Shop, anyone had any experiences with either of these, good or bad ? Or anyone else that is worth a look ?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, didn't think it wanted to be in Tech, if it does, sorry and please move

Cheers
Ady

My friend had an 'engine shop' 1.9 when there was a probelm they weren't at all intersted telling him it had run out of oil and it was his fault........after 2 weeks!!! if you really need to know the full story i can probably give you his number.

Elite .......good prices.......buts thats it! when there is a probelm, their warrenty was useless, infact dispite numerous requests they did not send out any form of receipt/warrenty paperwork (another friend who had a bug engine!!)

do a search on elite on volksmoan and you'll see what happens when ther is a problem

as for who is best i dont know myself but i would have thought baxter would probably be able to add a good opinion to this

Vege have a good reputation.

The guarantee is good and they will sort things out should you have a problem.

I think their price is good and they've been around for long enough to know they're not going to let you down.

More than happy with my VEGE replacement for my DH engine - fitted by Central VW Audi in Ellesmere Port - can't say I thought it was cheap but a) I don't know anything about engine prices and b) blimey it's worth every penny, goes really well!  Done a couple of thousand miles, scared stupid every time I pressed the accelerator while I was running it in but now it's great.

in trems of a replacemnt engine i think the old phrase of 'pay cheap - pay twice' could not be more applicable.

I'm on my second from elite after sending the first back. there was a tapping/knocking from the engine they guys at elite sent me some new tappets and extend-able push rods to fix it but no joy, so it was removed and sent back. apart from the time taken and a mix up with the delivery they seem OK nice chaps how ever i don't have the second engine in yet so watch this space.

THOUGHT I SHOULD ADD THAT THEY GUYS AT ELITE WERE VERY KEEN TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AS THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WHEN THEY STRIPED IT DOWN

look at the cost of an elite engine, add up what it costs to just buy the bits needed for a rebuild , add on the costs of machining and labour and you tell me how they can do it??? its impossible, a set of pistons barrels and a pair of heads is 600 quid............thats without new cam all bearings grinding refacing etc...........

something smells fishy and it aint fish!!

i put a vege motor in my first bus and it was great and still going strong. sometimes you do get what you pay for.

vege's are probably the most expensive bahind VW, but VW ones are going obsolete left right and centre.

yes, Vege are expensive, but if it dies when you go to France on your jollies you have a number to ring and it will be taken to a Vege repair centre, and if the fault is down to a problem with their workmanship it will get fixed.

Your paying for the warranty not the engine.

I fit Vege's, if they go wrong I fix them then bill vege, they then pay me.

I fitted one recently, it rattled, I took it out, they sent another and I fitted it again and got paid by Vege for the messing about.
The rattly one had spun a bearing, not anyones fault, it's just one of those things.

I have no personal experience with RemTec,  Elite or the Engine Shop, I do now know however that the ones that are painted gold or green from the large lads who like to play   use beetle camshafts and solid lifted and produce much less power than they are meant to, and to me are to be avoided at all costs.
