Tristar-Eric,

Hi and thanks for the comments. I don't think I can bring myself to put a subaru engine into the Tristar. It's a great engine but I think this van will have to stay within the VW/Audi group.

I know the RHD to LHD Tristar you are talking about. I have the steering rack from it!!

It belongs to Shaun S.  Everyone thought he was crazy to convert it, but it really just makes sense.

I'm surprised to hear there were only 19? Tristars delivered to the UK.

That's quite an elite group. Very similar to the Canadian group.  There's a rumour that one of the Canadian Tristars was pushed off the transport ship!  I'm still trying to find out if this indeed really did happen though.

Has anyone figured out how many were delivered to Sweden?  It seems 99% of them are coming from there.

Small update on the Tristar but the amont of work getting to this point cannot be underestimated.

I bought a set of sliding windows to fit as they've been missing ever since I bought the van and in my infinite wisdom, I decided to give them a make over, respray and tint the glass. Oh boy is this a horrible job!

Half way though putting them back together I made a discovery... Sliding windows are handed, i.e. the sliding window is always at the front so as to limit wind noise, leaks etc. So that means that you have a right and a left window right? Ok.

Well I tinted all 4 pieces of glass (2 per side) with the securite script on the outside on all pieces. When I came to put them back together I found that I had 2 left hand windows! Huh? After checking and double checking, it turns out VW only made 2 pieces of glass and you have one set with the script on outside and one set on the inside. Bummer!! So I had to pull off the tint on 2 windows and start again.

All back together now and I finally have some Tristar sliding windows in the Tristar!

Next will be tinting the front windows and rear heated screen.

Just upgraded the steering rack bushes to Powerflex ones as sold by Brickwerks... wow what a difference! Took me all of 20 minutes to fit!

After the weekends offroading, just pulling up at home my water level light started flashing... uhoh! Turns out the front to rears are on their way so they'll get done as soon as.

Now have upgraded the antiroll bar bushes with Powerflex too again from Brickwerks.

Another new look from Brickwerks although this is the prototype. If there is enough interest, Baxter will consider putting them into production.

What do you think?

Also a pic which didn't make it into the Holmfirth offroading weekend post but worth seeing. Dai took it with his 5 Megapixel N95! Looks better than my camera

Looks great Mike. Another 4wd barsteward eh?

Still loving mine - though the 1.9WBX is showing its age now.

Forget the Scoobies and get an Audi in it - you know it makes sense (just not the old 5v Turbo because the wastegate gets in the way of the fuel tank).

Got to get my finger out and get a cradle do I can get one in mine - busy sorting protection bars, roofrack and a suspension lift at the moment.

Someone on here is looking into having Audi 5 cylinder engine cradles made. I'm sure he'll announce it when he does.

Whats that? ^^^^^^^

Audi 5 cyl TDi?

Mike, I will keep an eye out for that announcement. Seems a shame to be plodding along when I have the bellhousing, zorst and mounts sat here gathering dust and I could be roaring around.

What you really mean is one that runs... eh Mike.

I have one, it's just that it's in a T4, where it belongs

Mine runs, I had it running a week ago. I'm just not interested in rushing finishing it just for the sake of finishing it.

Good to know yours is coming along.

I've just installed a set of 1.4:1 ratio rockers to the Tristar to see how much of a difference they make to the performance. Thanks to Dave Pickles for the loan .

With the Tristar engine being a Volkspares rebuild and having solid followers, the pushrods are longer. Fitting the 1.4:1 ratio rockers requires shorter pushrods and it just so happens that stock hydraulic pushrods are the right length (checked out the rocker arm geometry etc). A quick blat around the block shows up more power at higher rpm and slightly more torque through the mid range. Tomorrow will show the real difference up and down the M62 to work.

I'll get it on the gas anyliser tomorrow and see if the co% has changed.

One thing which is obvious is the increased noise from the cam gears. This engine has always been noisey from this area and the increased strain on the valve train is obvious.

When time allows, I'll get it back on the rollers to see what the hp and ftlbs increase figures are.

Mike,

Those wheels would look great on your Tristar.

I like the way you are following the brochure.

Thanks Posh, it looks like they may be out of my price range!

Here's a link to the 1.4:1 ratio rockers I've fitted on the Tristar.

Update on the engine bhp increase from the ratio rockers.

A quick removal of the propshaft (even with prop protection bars), I've managed to get that down to about 10 minutes now .

The first run on the rollers saw an increase up to 88bhp. Again we looked at igntion timing and saw another increase up to over 92bhp and an smoother power curve ironing out a bump at lower rpm. Not bad and almost at stock MV territory. I think I'd be suprised to see an MV at 95bhp now as they're all a little tired.

I think I'll ask Paul to run it from 1,000rpm next time to get a better idea of what's being produced at the lower end.

The only change to the engine has been the ratio rockers and this run I was running it on 95 Unleaded rather than 98 Octane at 84bhp so I'd say we're probably at 95bhp with V-power.

Once again a huge thanks to the guys at RS Tuning. Paul is always happy to help out and really knows his onions. He's recently tuned a 1.9PD TDi up to 247bhp and 370ftlbs or so.. !!

Update on the Tristar,

I picked up the aluninium dropsides brackets from Baxter this morning, another Brickwerks product!!

Very nicely machined and fit perfectly. Cheers Mr.B

Also fitted opening 1/4 light windows up front and tinted them at the same time. Just the main windows to do now.
