Hi there, New Kid` on the block. In 1999 I drove my family overland from UK-AUS in a Mercedes 609D (yeah, I kNOW there is water between India and Aus, thats what containerships are for!) anyway, the wife and I liked it so much the first time  that we want to do it again, smaller vehicle. Bought a 1994 non-turbo LT35 2.4ltr SWB HI roof off e-bay, good nick and running, 140k on clock, being re-sprayed whilst i type.

Anyway, we like it, christened FREEDOM 2 (guess what the other one was called?) it seems to take a while to start, engine turns for 10-15 secs before springing into life, I have put a 1-way valve in the fuel line to stop it `sliding back` when switched off but want it fixing good `n` proper. also, its not the quickest thing in the world, but then I am not in a hurry! any reccomendations from you good folk Would be great, I live in STAFFORD (where the M6 is cobbled...).

Should be back from a re-spray today, Where can I get a new VW badge for it and was there an internal, or external Spare wheel?

Hi Wheelrim have you checked your heater plugs ? sometimes the ones near the the injector pump get left because they are a pig to do.Also the cold start knob thingy rhd of dash under light switch does that work when you pull it ?its like a choke on an old car it moves a lever near the bottom of the injector pump to advance the timing to help with cold starts .And last my van used to similar until i put a new starter battery on now it starts right away .Good luck with the build and van a good site for help with the build is www.sbmcc.co.uk

Aaaah! you guyz are looking after me already, I was going to check the heater plugs as the van had been off road for over 3 years when I bought it, I drove it down from Newcastle, took the chance on her, and, she made it ok, bloody gears take some getting used to though!

JEEEZ! I`VE JUST NOTICED MY `LOCATION` IS AFGHANISTAN! I`LL HAVE TO CHANGE THAT IF I CAN........

Ok so i`ll play the dumb a*se and say, is mine a 4cyl or 6, and... if so, i take it i`ll need the appropriate no of plugs? yes, I am a numpty allright but during my drive to Australia I had NO mechanical problems, just 3 punctures, one was my fault, I had an argument with a bus in India..... hence the name `Wheelrim`.

If its the 2.4 it should have a straight 6 in it i dont know of any other engine apart from the perkins but i dont think it was 2.4.When you got it going was it lumpy and smokey like it was only firing on 3 or 4? that would mostly sugest the heater plugs .

Mike

Edit for being lupy

Mike.

My limited knowledge of engines says that it is running ok, i am wondering if i took it to a deisel specialists garage they could `tune` it or at least diagnose if there are any shortcomings in it, i am looking to spend between £100-200 so that the right person can tinker with it and get the best out of her. I like the word Lupy, but have no idea what it means, same as `crafter` as in LT & Crafter.

But i also like the word `Flange`, and thats vehicle related...
