It might be worth calling these guys, I have seen a lot of their conversion with surf boards on top or kayak on the side of the roof, their home page show a rack on a pop up roof http://www.camperconversions.net/

HH, Shucks, you're too kind... Kayak surfing is an extreme sport, I'm a non-swimmer so I knew I'd need to find out about it but I knew no one who did it to ask for advice - even the shop I bought my Scooters from (Reeds of Cambridge who have been in the kayak business for years) didn't know anything about the sport and couldn't advise me about suitable paddles! Oh and I didn't have a computer to 'surf' for help... So I had to learn - fast! Practise helps, but I also found a good basic book and read it and read it over and over again. Night time - read the book, day time - try and put it into practise. It worked! Everyday I saw an improvement and now I'm 'not too bad' [nowhere near as clever as the boy in Veedurb's first Mega picture - but then I did my flying when I was in the RAF - now I want to be ON the water, not upside down over it! ]. The Canoe Wales website has loads of links and is well worth exploring fully.. Sorry I don't know the South Coast at all but the rule of thumb for decent surf is a west facing beach! |

HH,
With regards equipment, I've an old 70N Yak buoyancy aid (which I must replace this year), a 2/3mm Palm Short John wetsuit, a 2/3mm Sola Long John wetsuit, a pair of Salomon shoes and an Ekla trolley |

I've seen a roof bar system that lowers a bracket over the side of the van to secure the canoe to at shoulder height and then once secured the whole lot slides back up onto the roof guided by the fitted roof bars. It was in a german catalogue for t4 addons, maybe reimo IIRC. Not sure how heavy or suitable it would be for a pop top as I didn't look into it at the time as my paraglider always went under the bed extension in the boot.
Are there a disproportionate number of kayakers/paddlers on this forum? Everybody seems to be at it! I feel I've got to include a kayak in my list of must haves on the van having read all this! Although I think inflatable rather than surf appeals more atm due to having two children under 5. Edited by cjohnson_uk |

Perhaps VW will start to offer kayaks as an optional extra? Anyway cj_uk, get those children into a kayak - of any description - and get them proficient - they'll thank you for it! |

That's my intention. We have friends in St Davids, one who instructs at one of the outbound centres there so I'm hoping to see a lot more of them in the next few years. I was in a kayak from about 12 as we had a lake in our back field so I was spoilt, it was a bit flat though! |
