Only reply to this thread if you have fitted alloy wheels and you have the following data.

  • wheel name/style or if OEM then what its off.
  • Dimensions of wheel(s)
  • Tyre sizes.
  • Use of adapters.
  • Use of shims
  • Machining required.
  • Offset of wheel(s)
  • Clearance problems?
  • Longer bolts required?

Plus anything else I forgot!

Pictures would be nice.

All dross and drivel will be deleted! - Keep it optimum!

Also worth a read

And - Wheelspecs.com

And - Tyresave.co.uk

Try using forum search facility using "wheels" and "alloys" too!

May just be my browser but looks like 2 of the 3 links here have now been moved? can't view that really useful table of width and offset, anyone know where else it's linked?

(Moderators feel free to delete this post once resolved!)
Thanks....

Yes. And believe it or not, there isnt that much difference between a big Audi or Merc and a T3 on the scales!!!!!!!
Have you not noticed that quite a few people on here advise AGAINST the use of cheap ebay repros????? Thats the reason why.

A wide wheel on a performance car such as a Porsche/Merc or Audi will be stressed more than most T3s will ever stress them.

Sorry to reply so late, but just re-found the thread.....

Maybe they do weigh similar EMPTY on the scales....but can you stick 1200kg in the back of an Audi or Merc?
Will a Porsche with 2 people in, doing 100mph, hitting a pothole.....stress a wheel like a Transporter with 1Ton in it, hitting the same hole at 50???
Side stress and vertical stress are a little different.Wink

Don't remember about MOT in UK, but since I moved to Norway, we have something called "EU Kontrol"...same thing, but stricter!
They examine any changed wheels to make sure they will be OK for the MAX load of the vehicle specs..and for speed (but not relevant to a Dub! ). Tyres too have to be rated for MAX..AND be in date!!!
When you get your "Pass" certificate (HOPEFULLY), it actually states all this crap on it for insurance. IF you change anything between tests (every 2 years), you have to tell them.
The GOOD thing is...according to MY insurance company, I can do ANY mods I like, even to the engine (as long as it has the same number on it)Big smile

I actually went to them and said (translated), " I've got this Dub...had a re-map on the engine, fitted new lights all-round, roof spoiler, new audio system, gonna get 17" alloy wheels, new exhaust, and lower it, (Thanks Simon), and more "tarty" stuff! "

Response was..."No problem...as long as it passes the EU Kontrol, but your only covered for £500 of accessories..ie the spots, etc"

2 sets of wheels/tyres (summer/winter) are std here...and a legal requirement...so any stuck in a garage or shed are also covered!

Even tho' we have a cr*p speed limit here...I'd only fit wheels that meet the specs.

I had these wheels fitted to my T3, just thought I'd note something which might be of use to people.

E240 Merc Rims 16"
ET 42
Width 7.5
PCD 112
Rear wheel require 10mm spacer, front needs 13-15mm.
Holes in wheels need boring out slightly to 14mm to take extended studs.

Alls good!

I'm am talking GVW not Kerb weight.

Comparing like for like.
GVW of something like a Big Merc or Audi and that of a T3.
And also bear in mind that OEM wheels are generally going to be over engineered.

thats why those in the know generally advice against the use of aftermarket "no name" wheels.

I have never, in years of using this, and other forums, heard of an OEM wheel failing due to the weight of a T3.

I would agree completely...and I have been doing this for over 20 years. The track record just does not support any kind of a problem.

Hi Jamiegolf,

Did you *need* the spacers for clearance issues, or is it just for looks? I'm looking at this exact set of wheels, but I'm not allowed spacers. Mine are ET35's.

Cheers,

Allan.

Mercedes Steel 7.5x16 et41
Part no 2104000802
General Grabber AT2's  m+s 215/65/16  98T
Longer rear studs and front stud conversion
Tapered bolts
Spacers 20mm front 30mm rear(smaller would do, but used what I had)
Slider just catches, door will fully open ok.
Van lowered 45mm with no clearance problems, it's close at the front, maybe a different story with a full load, going to put some stock height springs on anyway.

When lowered the front tyres would catch the rear edge of the front lower spoiler occasionaly

Jamiegolf and AllanW...
..I am close to getting a set of these AMG 17s
7.5 x 17 but with an ET of 42, on Tee3s speadsheet even a 10mm spacer on the front makes it pretty close..
Jamiegolf, was your ET 35 to get away with a 5mm spacer?
AllanW did you get those 35s and did they fit OK?
cheers me dears

Err....late again
So....I have a set of OEM Merc wheels....can I safely fit them to my T4?

BTW...they're from a Smart ForTwo...made by Merc....OK, it only weighs in at about 750kg...BUT, they ARE Merc OEM wheels....so they MUST be better than buying a set of Van Rated wheels from somewhere like Road and Race...yes?

Edit;
OH SH*T.....just realised I'm trying to wind Tee3 up.....and I'm gonna be visiting Brickwerks next year for some work doing.....there goes any discount I was hoping for!
