I've just finished sound proofing my 88 Caravelle.......(powered by mechanical 1.9 TDI.)As im in the marine industry I used the best noise reduction material available - 'QUIET LIFE' as used by many boat builders and recommended by PERKINS engines......it really is the real deal. The bus is super quiet now....so much so I can now here things rattling in the glove box at 70mph and wind noise around the quarter lights!!!! HOWEVER.....one noise remains a real pain that simply wont go away....a sort of low frequency harmonic hum which almost builds up pressure on the ear drums..........I have tracked this down to being induction noise from the air filter which is a sponge mushroom jobby tucked behind the nearside rear light.......anyone else had this problem and sorted out a cure...........? Cheers GaV.........

I found using the TD airbox reduced the intake noise quite a bit on mine, it had a cone type filter on before hand...

got any links to this Quiet Life stuff?

I had a major failure last week on a long journey with 700kgs of furniture
loaded in my T3. It felt like the brakes had come on, coz over 1800rpm it
just levelled out.

Nursed it to unload destination (you can get 80km/p/h on the level at
1800rpm in 5th - surprised me! And save 6 ltrs fuel in the process. Takes
an hour longer though!)

Anyway, emptied the wagon so I could access the engine compartment,
and found the inlet hose to the air filter had just sucked itself flat!

Removed the hose from the air filter inlet, and all was sweet for the
journey home (another 350kms.)

As she's in for a major service, I got it checked out - apparently the
infeed pipe in the outside vent is a "cardboard & wire" construction, and
just collapsed over time.

I used the TDi golf air box that came with the engine.

Needs modifying though.

Induction noise on any turbo diesel engine is HUGE, i too had a cone filter on mine (1.6TD) and the sound was deafening. To completely get rid of the noise you need a decent hardwalled pipe (plastic) from turbo to airbox and use the original round metal airbox as originally fitted to the turbo diesel vans. The noise has completely dissapeared with this set-up.

Well the plastic pipe came from a VW diesel engine - not sure which one as it was bought in a box of bits. Luckily it had the correct bends in it to just need a rubber coupler onto the turbo and the 90 deg elbow onto the airfilter housing. Its a shame the diesel airfilter can isnt nicer to look at as it lets the engine bay down (compared to a sexy looking cone filter) BUT the noise is stopped in its tracks. I might give it a lick of paint sometime!!

After a bit of a trawl online,I've found the people that sell "quiet life " foam.theres quite a range of thicknesses too.

It's http://www.asap-supplies.com/toc.php?manage=QUIETLIFE&gr oup=QUIETLIFE_SOUNDPROOFING&toc=sub&brand=yes&as ap=%%session%%

Hot1200, did you soundproof the whole van ?? I was thinking of lining the cavity above and in front of the engine and box only....

yeah, be good to find out where you put the soundproofing, its probably my
biggest complaint with my van - have put some stuff on but its not up to the
job, the AAZ makes a hell of a racket!

If you could tell us which Quiet life stuff you used and any photos would be
fantastic

Cheers
