Yes, you will need hardware & software though, and it can be easy to muck things up so be careful. VCDS and OBD11 are two popular choices, but make sure the version you buy is compatible with the vehicle/s you intend to use it on.

Carista seems well thought of at the reasonably priced end and seems to get good results, not sure about shipping to oz. It does have a subscription though but it is fairly cheap and I believe you can just buy a month when you need it. It can reset fault codes (once the fault is no longer present) and make some changes to things like locking options. On a 2006, options possible are fairly limited. It may be able to code new parts that need it but nothing is guaranteed.
If all you want to do is say, clear an airbag code and light caused by switching the ign on with airbag disconnected you might even get away with a £10 Chinese code reader, however they are it's a bit of a lottery as to whether they actually work at all when they eventually arrive! VCDS is best of course but even limiting yourself to 3 VIN numbers (your van and 2 other vehicles) I think it is still £225. Most of the adaptations and coding you can to do with these tools concern all the other ECU's on the van, there are some changes you can make to the engine ECU but it will usually want a security code and you would need to know exactly what you were doing as Greg says. No tool of this type can do any remapping or extract immobilizer codes. If you are keeping the van long term and mostly doing your own repairs a good code reader/scanner will pay for itself many times over. What were you hoping to do?

Have taken the van to a local repair place ,the information provided by them is many of the codes are not reading and there are multiple faults (I really don’t know which way to go) the vehicle is still running but a little rough, 85000 Kls on odometer all mine .As you suggested if I am unsure what to do leave it alone : thanks for the advice Bob B
