Cooling System 1600 Diesel 1990

I have a 1990 1600cc Turbo Diesel T3  (Elsie Conversion)

I have been having a pressure and water loss issue for some time on this van. 
Thinking I had found the problem as a leaking coolant pipe coupling that feeds
into the back of the block, so I replaced the O ring in this small coupling. I made
a journey of 40 miles and during the last 2 miles the pressure sensor light
again started blinking.  Upon
investigation the coolant loss seemed to have stopped from around coupling and
O ring, but I now found that the tank behind the numberplate was full and the header tank
empty and the coolant did not draw back through during cooling, leaving the
header tank virtually empty.

The temperature gauge seems to remain
central for most of the journey and only moved beyond the vertical the central
point when I was going up hills.  Any helpful
guidance would be appreciated.

	sounds more like you have a T3 than an LT
	1978 2litre LT28 abbomination!!!!
